The replay editor feature in Skate 4 should be better than ever, according to a newly filed patent by EA. EA's new patent details the intricacies of the replay editor as fans await more official details about Skate 4, which will be available to playtest on consoles later this year.

In 2021, EA announced the opening of a new studio called Full Circle, the developers of the new Skate 4 game. Unlike the beloved Skate 3 from 2010, the new skateboarding title will be free-to-play and offer live service experiences that players should feel familiar with in modern gaming. Playtesting for Skate 4 began in 2022, and details about the game were kept under wraps, except for a few leaks that revealed a portion of the open-world map. EA and Full Circle showed off Skate 4's ragdoll physics in 2023, and the title received one of its biggest updates yet at Summer Game Fest 2024. At the annual showcase, EA shared its "Update from M-Corp" video and confirmed that console playtesting for Skate 4 will begin in fall 2024, with registrations opening shortly after the video aired.

An Update from M-Corp - skate.

Take a look at this update from M-Corp, specifically regarding skate.

EA recently published a new patent for an updated and improved replay editor, an important feature found in the Skate games released thus far. Although Skate 4 is not explicitly named in the patent, the patent's description mentions a "third-person skateboarding game," and one of the patent's drawings depicts a replay editor window for the game. This replay editor allows the Skate 4 player to capture and edit "simulation state data" of their gameplay, which can be rendered, customized, and shared with other players. The data is transmitted and stored within different modules in a replay editor system, which modifies the data in various stages. The player's input and the replay's input are factored into the system, and the end result is a fully rendered replay that the player and other users are able to access in Skate 4.

New EA Patent Details Skate 4's Replay Editor Feature

  • The patient explains the capture and editing process for a "third-person skateboarding game," likely Skate 4.
  • Players can customize and share their replays with other Skate fans.

The replay editor patent also depicts new editing options that players will presumably have access to in Skate 4. For example, players may add tags, emojis, and other visuals to personalize their replay. Different camera options and camera effects will be available as well, similarly to the editing options found in the previous three Skate games, including 2009's highly-rated Skate 2.

It's unclear whether the replay editor feature will be present in the upcoming console playtest, but the playtest should still be a great opportunity for fans to try out the new Skate game nonetheless. Feedback from the playtest will help the developers at Full Circle improve Skate 4, which doesn't have a release date yet.
