Highlights

  • The Sims series relied on physical releases for DLC due to limited online distribution in the past.
  • Finding old Sims games at Goodwill delighted a long-time fan who had to beg for expansions.
  • While older game prices seem high, the total cost is lower than current versions with optional add-ons.

A long-time player of The Sims made an impressive find at a Goodwill store, discovering The Sims and The Sims 2 games for sale. The purchases have delighted the fan of The Sims and come with an amusing backstory.

While the number of releases has certainly increased over the years, from the beginning, The Sims series has released expansions that have added fresh content to the titles, rejuvenating the experience for players who had already committed hundreds of hours to the games. When The Sims 1 and 2 came out, in 2000 and 2004 respectively, online downloading wasn't remotely like it is today. Slow dial-up and DSL limited the ability to distribute DLC and expansions online readily to most gamers, so titles like these relied on physical releases like these Goodwill finds to add new content.

Much-Anticipated The Sims 4 Rival Gets Canceled

A much-anticipated life sim meant to compete with The Sims 4 gets canceled following around half a decade's worth of troubled development.

Reddit user and The Sims fan ronaldregananime shared their discovery of the original The Sims game, and three expansions for The Sims and The Sims 2 that they brought home from a Goodwill store. In all, they brought home The Sims, The Sims Livin' Large expansion, The Sims 2 Bon Voyage expansion, and The Sims 2 Glamour Life Stuff. The fan says they've been playing the series for 16 years, and that the find particularly delighted them, as they had to beg for expansion packs when they were younger.

The Cost of Sims Content

While the fan didn't state how much they spent on this particular find, it's something a younger player might have had trouble affording or convincing a parent to pick up at launch. In general, gamers could find the base game for around $50, depending on how long it had been out, and expansions and stuff packs could cost $20-$30. Once the game prices are adjusted for inflation, that'd be roughly $90 for the base title and up to $55 for the expansions. Ronaldregananime even told their dad about their find, reminding them of how they used to say that they could buy their own expansions after they got a job.

While it's easy to see how a kid could struggle to convince a parent to buy them these games, buying every release for The Sims 1 or 2 would still come at a lower cost than today's equivalent. The Sims 4 has released over $1000 worth of content at this point between stuff packs, expansions, and kits. While add-ons are completely optional, and have helped to keep The Sims 4 enjoyable nearly a decade after its release, it can come at a steep price.

The Sims

EA's life simulation franchise The Sims began in the year 2000 with a game of the same name that was, at one point, the highest-selling PC game of all time.

The main series games let players build a home, create a handful of characters, and then guide them through their relationships, careers, and goals.
