  • The Spider-Man franchise is expanding with new spinoffs, but unfortunately, the anticipated Silk series has been scrapped.
  • Despite being in development for years, the Silk series has been canceled due to a focus on other projects in the spider-verse.
  • With rumors of a potential Spider-Gwen movie, fans will have to wait and see what direction the Spider-Man franchise takes next.

The immensely popular Spider-Man franchise is at last receiving spinoffs that do justice to its characters. Regrettably, one character will not be stepping into the limelight. As the Spider-Man franchise continues to soar in success with each new project, not every planned installment will reach audiences.

Recent confirmation reveals that a highly anticipated Spider-Man spinoff remains on hold as the focus shifts to other ventures. While several other Spider-Man projects are in development or will soon see the light of the day (such as the animated Disney Plus series Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), it appears that there is no desire to move forward with a series focused on one of the spider-verse's more obscure characters, Silk.

According to Deadline's report, the long-anticipated Silk: Spider Society series has officially been scrapped. Despite being in development for several years and receiving the green light two years ago, the project has since seen little to no progress. Now, it has been confirmed that the series will not be advancing any further.

Silk Spider-Man Spinoffs Amazon Prime

After five years in development and originally scheduled to begin production two years ago, the series was recently axed, with its extensive development process being the primary reason for its cancelation. The character at the center of the series, Silk, was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman, gains her powers after being bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker. Her journey unfolds as she breaks free from captivity and embarks on a quest to locate her missing family, eventually emerging as the superhero known as Silk.

According to the source, in 2019, SPT enlisted Lauren Moon to pen a television adaptation of the comic. A year later, Sony Pictures Television (which holds the character rights) initiated discussions with Amazon to develop the series. By 2021, Amazon Studios struck a deal with Tom Spezialy to take on the role of showrunner for Silk, collaborating with Moon. The series was officially unveiled in 2022, with Angela Kang announced as the new writer. However, the fate of the series rested heavily on its script, which had undergone at least three iterations by that point. Following the 2023 writers' strike, additional revisions were made, which were positively received. Nevertheless, after a reevaluation of resources, the decision was made to prioritize the Noir series over Silk, resulting in the cancellation of the latter.

The source strongly suggests that the series will be shelved, leaving open the possibility of a revival in the future. Currently, the focus appears to be on the development and success of the Noir series. Recently, both Marvel and Sony have not seen significant success with their female-led projects. However, there are rumors circulating that Sony is in the process of developing another Spider-Man spinoff, a Spider-Gwen movie, which could potentially change this trend if successful. In addition, the much-maligned Madame Web movie has been seeing far more success on Netflix. Whether this is from people genuinely enjoying them ovie or hate-watching it out of morbid curiosity remains a mystery. For now, fans will have to wait and see what unfolds.
