Developer Konami hosted its second Silent Hill Transmission last month, providing new and exciting updates for the legendary Silent Hill franchise. Last year's event introduced fans to a slate of upcoming mysterious multimedia titles, leading fans to question and anticipate what these new projects could entail. However, 2024's Silent Hill Transmission focused on delivering a 13-minute gameplay trailer for the Silent Hill 2 Remake, followed by a behind-the-scenes look at the Return to Silent Hill film. With the vast majority of last year's big reveals still shrouded in mystery after 2024's Silent Hill Transmission, some of the franchise's biggest questions still linger.

Silent Hill is a multimedia horror anthology franchise, which focuses on psychological horror. The franchise began in 1999 with the original Silent Hill video game on the Sony Playstation, quickly becoming a cult classic. Over the last 25 years, the series has released over 20 video game entries across all platforms and arcade, and two major motion pictures. With more of each currently in development, Silent Hill is among the most expansive survival horror franchises in the world. While the Silent Hill 2 Remake is the franchise’s major focus at the moment, two additional Silent Hill titles were announced alongside it during 2022's Transmission. However, neither has received a major update since, leading fans to question their current status.

2023’s Silent Hill Transmission Introduced a Slate of Original Titles

The original Silent Hill Transmission took place in October 2022, revamping the long-dormant franchise with a slate of major announcements. Konami announced that projects were in the works with several video game and motion picture studios, with Konami looking to expand and grow the franchise for modern audiences. Major reveals included the Silent Hill 2 Remake, the Return to Silent Hill film, Silent Hill: Townfall, and the since-released Silent Hill: Ascension interactive web series. However, the biggest reveal was the announcement of a brand-new entry in the mainline Silent Hill series, Silent Hill f.

Silent Hill f is being developed by NeoBards Entertainment, transporting the series to 1600s Japan. Though little was shown, players caught a glimpse of its hauntingly beautiful creature design, which features strange floral growths, and its environmental overgrowth, comprised of creeping red tendrils. Silent Hill: Townfall, developed by No Code Studios under Annapurna and Konami, is far more mysterious, with its reveal playing a brief section of audio over a visual of a hand radio. While both titles caused immense buzz after 2022's Silent Hill Transmission, neither appeared at this year's event.

Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall’s Absence Doesn't Answer Big Franchise Questions

The absence of Silent Hill's two new titles during 2024's Silent Hill Transmission has emboldened fans' biggest questions. While the Silent Hill 2 Remake is anticipated by many fans, Silent Hill f 's status as the series' first new mainline entry since 2012's Silent Hill: Downpour makes it the franchise's most eagerly-awaited project. However, the past two years have seen fans receive little word about its development, let alone its narrative and gameplay concepts. Regarding Silent Hill: Townfall, No Code Studios promised updates for 2024, but has yet to deliver any.

Konami's silence regarding both Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall leaves the franchise's biggest questions lingering. Fans have been eager to learn more about both titles since their first reveals, with discourse covering the full range of topics from minor aesthetic differences to overarching central concepts. However, fans know little more in 2024 than they did following 2022's Silent Hill Transmission, and the number and frequency of questions only continue to grow. It remains to be seen when Silent Hill fans may receive updates on either Silent Hill f or Silent Hill: Townfall. It is likely fans will need to wait until at least October 2024, when Silent Hill 2 Remake is released, shifting focus to the franchise's other forthcoming titles.
