Blocking early access behind a Deluxe Edition pre-order will potentially annoy some Silent Hill 2 fans, whereas others will jump on the opportunity to return to the long-dormant franchise ahead of schedule. The Silent Hill 2 remake marks the first new main series Silent Hill game since Downpour launched in 2012. Otherwise, the franchise has stuck to spin-offs, experimental projects, or, in the case of the stretch from 2015 to 2022, nothing at all.

The Silent Hill franchise went on an unfortunate extended hiatus after the release of P.T. in 2014. P.T. was meant to be a "playable teaser" that would eventually lead to Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills. Ultimately, Silent Hills was canceled and P.T. was pulled from the PlayStation Store. Konami then finally released the highly divisive Silent Hill: Ascension, followed by Silent Hill: The Short Message, which was panned by fans and critics alike.

Even though Silent Hill: Ascension and Silent Hill: The Shortage Message were not well-received, there is still hope for the Silent Hill franchise yet. The Silent Hill 2 remake looks promising, and there are at least two more Silent Hill gaming projects confirmed to be in the works in the form of Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall. Not only that, but a new Silent Hill movie is in production as well.
