Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance gives players an incredible amount of freedom when building the Nahobino or the demons in your party. Through Demon Fusion, players are able to pass along specific skills to other demons that usually can't learn that specific skill.

This usually has useful results, as this new demon can be built to perfectly fit whatever role the player needs. The only downside is the skill potential of the resulting demon, which is indicated by the plus or minus numbers next to various skills.

One of the major changes in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance from the base game is the ability to respec the Nahobino; here's how to do it.

What Is Skill Potential In Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance

A Jack-o'-Lantern Using A Fire Spell With Proficiency +5

Skill Potential determines how good that demon is at using a skill of a specific element. Skill Potential affects the MP cost of using a skill, and doesn't affect the resulting damage. This means any demon can use any skill as long as it can somehow get that skill. All demons have specific elements they have a higher potential for, and other elements that they have a negative affinity with.

A positive number next to an element means it will cost less MP to cast a spell of that element, with higher numbers resulting in a lower cost. A negative number means it will cost more to cast a spell of that element, with the same multiplier just going in the other direction. The highest a skill potential can go is +9, while the lowest it can go is -7. The various elements are:

  • Physical
  • Fire
  • Ice
  • Lightning
  • Force
  • Light
  • Dark
  • Almighty
  • Ailment
  • Recovery
  • Support

How To Change Skill Potential In Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance

The Nahobino doesn't have any negative skill potentials and starts at zero for all elements. Through the Cosmos section of Miracles, players can purchase Masteries of whatever element they want, increasing the Nahobino's skill potential in each element. Players should choose how they want to build the Nahobino in Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance before purchasing these upgrades as they cost a hefty amount of Glory.

Players can also increase the skill potential of their demons using Sutras of the corresponding element. Sutras are rare items found using a navigator, and it's not recommended to use them on demons early on as new ones will be fused often. The best use of Sutras is usually to maximize the skill potential of a demon that already has a high positive number, as trying to get a negative to a positive will take most of the Sutras a player finds in a playthrough.
