One quest remains the same, however, no matter the paths the player undertakes, and that is the first main quest of the Netherworld – The Lay Of The Land quest. This a walkthrough for any new players who might have gotten lost trying to reach Tokyo Tower.
What is the Lay of The Land Quest?
The Lay of the Land quest is one of the very first missions the player will have to do in Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Specifically, it’s the first main quest the player has to complete upon reaching the Netherworld.
Aogami gives the player this quest and its goal is to reach the Tokyo Tower.
How To Start The Quest
“Head to Tokyo Tower to gain more insight into this world.”
Upon entering the Netherworld, becoming the Nahobino, and winning a fight against some Demons, the player will look over and see the Tokyo Tower. It’s impossible to miss this quest as it’s essential to the story’s progression.
Completing the Lay of The Land Quest
Reaching the First Leyline Fount
The very first part of completing this quest is reaching and unlocking the first Leyline Fount, the Tamachi Leyline Fount to be specific. It will be located immediately after sliding down the hill. The player will unlock some of its abilities, but not all, namely the Cadaver’s Hollow, but also healing and reviving allies, for a small fee.
Advancing a bit further, the player will learn how to recruit their very first demon, which will be a fairy Pixie. The player should make sure to recruit powerful demons on their way to complete this quest, as it finishes with the first boss fight in the game.
Reaching the Second Leyline Fount
After finding their first Leyline Fount, the player should head to the next one, as they serve as great checkpoints on the map and the player is able to use them to teleport between locations. On their way to the second fount, the player will run into a peculiar character – Amanozako, a small flying demon in a Kimono. The player will have to fight a bunch of demons to save her. For now, she will leave, but later on, she will join the player.
The player should take a right turn as they advance further. With that, the player will reach the second Leyline Fount, specifically the Mita Leyline Fount. The player will unlock one of the best features in the game here, the World of Shadows, and meet Sophia for the first time.
Defeating the First Abscess
Ahead of the Mita Leyline Fount, the player will be warned by Aogami about the Abscess, a demon nest. The player has to defeat it to be able to continue ahead. To best deal with it, the player should make sure they’re at full health first and sprint towards it, avoiding other demons it summoned. As it’s the first Abscess, it will be very easy to defeat.
Defeating Glasya-Labolas
With the Abscess down, the player will press forward and spot a Magatsu Rail. You should go right of it to continue on your path.
Upon heading there, the player will reach a location with a train and a familiar face, Yuzuru Atsuta, as well as a new face new to Vengeance, a girl known as Yoko Hiromine. These two will join the player in their fight against this mini-boss, Glasya-Labolas. The player should keep in mind that this creature is weak to Electric, but immune to Force and Dark.

For players unfamiliar with the Shin Megami Tensei series, there are a few easy mistakes to make in Vengeance.
After the fight, the demon flees, and Yuzuru leaves, but Yoko stays with the player as a guest.
Reaching the Third Leyline Fount
With the player having defeated Glasya-Labolas, they now should locate the third Leyline Fount, which isn’t far. The player can easily find it by continuing north. It is known as the Shiba Leyline Fount. The player should be careful as a very high-level demon roams the area, and a fight is better avoided until further leveling up.
Upon getting closer to the fount, the demon in Kimono the player saved before appears. Amanozako wants to be of help and becomes the player’s first Demon Navigator, with more being available to unlock later on.
The player also unlocks a new feature for the Leyline Fount, known as the Demon Haunts. There, the player can rest and interact with their demon and with Aogami.
Reaching the Fourth Leyline Fount
Going past the powerful demon, the player will reach an area with climbable surfaces. The player should go up there. It’s important that the player speaks to the cat with a quest, as that unlocks the ability to take on side quests.
After reaching another Magatsu Rail, the player should slide down ahead of it. The next Leyline Fount is right ahead of them. This is the Hamamatsucho Leyline Fount, and while it’s not exactly on the path to Tokyo Tower, it’s good to unlock it.
Reaching the Fifth Leyline Fount
With that, the player should take a step back from the fourth fount and look back. There, they will see a bridge going up, and that is the player’s next location. When the player reaches the top of the first bridge, they should go right, before turning left again.
The player will run into another Abcess that they have to defeat, and should use the same tactic as the first one. This one is easy as well, as it’s still early game. The player should then head up the hill, where they will find the last Leyline Fount, for now, the Tokyo Tower Leyline Fount.
The player is almost done with this quest now.
Defeating the Hydra Boss
The player now has to take on their first boss if they choose to continue past this Leyline Fount. Before that, however, the player should prepare for this fight. The demon spits powerful poisonous and fiery attacks. Due to that, the player should avoid bringing along any demons that are weak to Fire, or even better, if they can find a demon that blocks or partially resists Fire, such as Onmoraki.
This demon is also weak to Ice-based attacks, so a demon like Zhu Tun She could be useful. The player can also do a side quest to recruit either Apsaras or Leanan Sidhe. For this specific boss fight, Leanna Sidhe fares a lot better, as Aspasaras is weak to fire (but does dish out ice-based attacks, the Hydra’s weakness). Both could be of some use in this first boss fight.
Before the fight starts, the player will witness a flashback where they will see important characters, such as Abdiel and Lucifer, the Lord of Chaos.
The fight could be a challenge for newcomers, but should be easily dealt with. When the player finally takes down the Hydra, this will be the end of the Lay Of The Land. The player will be able to move on to the next part of the story.
