As with its predecessors, Shin Megami Tensei 5 sets out to give the player as much content and a reason to come back to it after completing the game as possible. There are multiple endings and post-game content that require the player to take certain routes through the story, adding more to the replay value.

In addition to multiple endings, Shin Megami Tensei 5 has two new-game plus modes. These new game-plus modes are called Newborn and Reborn.

Newborn Mode

Shin Megami Tensei 5's Newborn mode will reset the protagonist back to level 1. However, collectible info on Demons and enemies will be carried over in the Demon Compendium. In addition, unlocked fusions and certain miracles will also be available in Shin Megami Tensei5's Newborn. This mode retains the challenge of SMT5's combat while only carrying over important items and info.

Reborn Mode

Less challenging than the Newborn mode, Shin Megami Tensei 5's Reborn mode carries almost everything over from the original game. Nahobino's level from the previous game is retained as well as any collected demons and their info from the Compendium.

Which Mode Should You Choose

The main character from Shin Megami Tensei 5

The Reborn new game plus mode in Shin Megami Tensei is the easiest version and better suited to players that like to do speed runs. It could also be argued that given the game's difficulty, the Reborn mode is also the most fun and it is something of a power trip being able to despatch enemies in an almost god-like manner in combat. It should be noted, however, the only thing that is missing from the Reborn mode is the Talismans. The Talismans are key items that allow the protagonist and his demon to initiate the Magatsuhi skills.

For players that are looking for more of a challenge on their second playthrough, they should choose the Newborn mode. The Demon Compendium will carry over, making it easier to create demon fusions and the Demon Proficiency Miracles also carry over. This is still very useful because it will unlock more skill slots for the demon allies. Keep in mind that the battles are just as challenging as the player's first run-through of the game. Unless of course, they want to bump the difficulty up and make the game even more challenging.

So whether one is looking to punish themselves or walk the apocalyptic lands of Tokyo like a demi-god, Reborn and Newborn mode has something for everybody.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 is available now for the Nintendo Switch.
