She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer Jessica Goa as recently shared that she wasn’t allowed to make the show’s jokes about the MCU too mean.
Although there is plenty of action to be found throughout the show, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is first regarded and categorized as a comedy series. In other words, the new show is filled to the brim with clever, witty jokes. Most of the jokes made are directed toward the ridiculous situations that Walters constantly finds herself immersed in, but many are also directed toward the MCU in general. However, Gao told IGN there were some limits when it came to the comedy.
Gao opened up about the strict sense of censorship she felt while writing for She-Hulk. She revealed that Marvel was reviewing her jokes about the MCU like a hawk, with lots of restriction and restraint involved throughout when it came to what she was allowed to make fun of and what was considered off limits to them. When Goa was asked whether Marvel made her tone certain jokes down or just eliminate them altogether, she replied, "Yes. I mean, most of the time, the only jokes that they really forced us to pull back on were when we were being a little too mean when we were poking fun at Marvel things.'
Examples of jokes made at the MCU's expense include the episode 1 gag poking fun at the fact that Captain America may be a virgin. She-Hulk episode 2 seemed to take more of a direct approach and made a joke surrounding the fact that the Hulk actor had obviously changed drastically following the character’s brief intro in The Incredible Hulk. Yet, the interesting question here is how fans are feeling in regard to jokes about the MCU. Do they find it offensive or is this merely the content they have been waiting for?
It appears as though Marvel Studios' strict censorship is out of a means of protection. The incredible empire they have built is filled with lots of history and has an incredibly loyal, strong fanbase, many of whom take great pride in what a lot of others would find as silly non-important details. Therefore, Marvel seems to just be doing its best to ensure that no fans get offended or uncomfortable.
