The game was originally planned to be the first sequel in the Shantae video game series and was slotted for a launch on the Game Boy Advance, but the project was never completed. Now, over 20 years later, the original development team has been brought together by Way Forward and is working on the game's official release for the Switch. Shantae's original creators Matt and Erin Bozon were present for the announcement, boosting fan excitement for the long-lost sequel.

The Shantae series is best-known for its iconic dance and transformation mechanics, which highlight the powers of the half-genie protagonist. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will once again allow players to use genie magic to turn Shantae into different animals, such as an elephant and a monkey, to utilize various powers and progress through the game. One fun mechanic that will be unique to Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is the ability to shift the world, both the background and foreground, to solve puzzles and discover new ways to advance through levels.

Also shown in the announcement trailer was the addition of a brand new 4-Player Battle Mode - a first in the Shantae franchise. This new local multiplayer mode will allow players to duke it out against their friends as Shantae and other characters from the franchise. Shantae is considered by many to rank among the best platforming game franchises, and Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution holds the potential to reinvigorate the existing fandom and possibly draw in new audiences.

Gaming fans are often pleasantly surprised to see classic franchises getting remasters and reboots, and the upcoming release of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution has already prompted celebrations among players.
