Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree continues the base game's tradition of extremely complex questlines that have very little in the way of guidance. Players will almost certainly encounter certain items and NPCs that leave them utterly confused. One such example is the proper use of the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation consumables. On their surface, these items appear to have a fairly mundane - and redundant - use. However, in true FromSoftware fashion, players who don't follow a very specific chain of events, will probably never know how to use the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation in Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Curseblade's Cirque is a Backhand Blade introduced in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Here's how players can get it.

The Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation are unique consumables that can be pretty tricky to find. This guide will show you where to find them, and how to properly use them.

Do not consume the Iris of Grace or Iris of Occultation! They are extremely limited, and losing one could result in being locked out of a specific item.

Where to Find Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation in Shadow of the Erdtree

Currently, there are four known locations for the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation. Two locations for each. Three of the locations are in and around the Shadow Keep, with the fourth being the Fort of Reprimand.

Iris of Occultation 1 – Fort of Reprimand:

  • There are two ways to reach the Fort of Reprimand. The first way, simply follow the main story, and once you've defeated Rellana , you'll have access to Scadu Altus. When the main path heading north from Highroad Cross forks, take the path that goes southeast to reach the fort.
  • The second method involves reaching Scadu Altus early. If you follow the road directly east from the Castle Front site of grace, you'll eventually reach a point where it curves. Instead of following the road south, continue east toward the cliff. You'll see an enemy standing right at the edge. That is where you want to start making your way down. On the map it looks like a giant ravine. Make your way down, then up the other side. Stick to the rock wall on the left and follow it through the poisonous area. Just as you get close to the end, you'll find a blocked Spiritspring. The pile of rocks you need to knock over is just beyond it, very easy to find. Use the Spiritspring to jump onto a higher cliff, then head right to find a second Spiritspring. The second spring takes you directly to the Behind the Fort of Reprimand site of grace.
  • Make your way down to the front area of the fort, with all the hanging bodies. If coming from the front, you'll encounter an Omenkiller in the courtyard. If coming from the back entrance, you'll have to fight several enemies to get to the main courtyard. In the courtyard, head to the northern wall. In the center, you'll find a hole that leads to a lower chamber. Drop down and kill the Omenkiller hiding below. You will automatically receive Iris of Occultation 1 upon its death.

Iris of Occultation 2 – Drained Church District:

Draining the Church District:

  • The second Iris of Occultation is found in the Shadow Keep's Church District. To reach this area, you'll have to take a long trip from Scadu Altus, through Bonny Village, then up and around to the keep's back gate. Use Game ZXC's guide to reaching the Shadow Keep Back Gate if you need help reaching this area.
  • Once you make it to the Church District, you'll have to drain the water that most of the area is submerged in. To do this, jump on to the roof from the first Site of Grace, jump across to the ruined brick building. Jump up to the ledge on the right. Watch out for exploding enemies. Follow the roof past the first Fire Knight, then jump to the slanting beam. You'll feel an Ulcerated Tree Spirit begin to rumble. Head up the beam, then into a hole in the next roof. The hole leads to several skinny arches that you can land on. After landing, walk straight ahead and drop through the hole down to the lower level with the small crabs.
  • Once in the church ruins, head northwest through the next opening/door. Be careful, as a Fire Knight is slowly approaching you as you proceed. Enter that chamber, then take the first left and keep following the path until you reach the bat enemies. Turn left where they are, then follow the path past the broken section, sticking close to the right side. Watch out for a little gap in the ground, it is easy to fall into. At the end, you'll see a chamber entrance with a ladder on the right. Take the ladder up.
  • At the top, you'll find the mechanism for draining the Church District.

Collect Iris of Occultation 2:

  • From the drainage mechanism, head back down the ladder and into the small chamber. Drop onto the wooden platform, then to ground level. Exit and turn right into the church to find the Sunken Chapel site of grace. Heading northeast out of the chapel will lead you to an Ulcerated Tree Spirit fight, though not the one you want. Killing this one will get you the Mantle of Thorns spell.
  • From this large circular courtyard, head out and northwest, past the ruined building with large crabs, to a courtyard with two dead bodies lying on the ground with items glowing. This is where the second Ulcerated Tree Spirit is found. Killing it will get you the second Iris of Occulation.

Iris of Grace 1 – Shadow Keep Warrior Jar Chamber:

  • As you head down the main path through Shadow Keep, you'll eventually reach the Storehouse. From the Specimen Chamber First Floor site of grace, which is the area's first, go to the left around the large animal, and head west into the first chamber you see. There should be an elevator very soon after entering.
  • Take the elevator down, then head right into the first door opening. Continue down the hall, but watch for the pot enemy jumping out of the first opening on the left. Once that is dealt with, you can either go through the opening and jump over the rail, or continue down the hall, take a left at the end and go down the stairs. Jumping over the rail will put you right at the altar where the first Iris of Grace is found. Be careful, however, as there is a stronger version of the pink pot enemy right when you land. If you use the stairs, however, there are several more to deal with. The altar sits at the eastern end of the large chamber.

Iris of Grace 2 - Tree-Worship Passage, Shadow Keep Church District

  • For the final Iris, you'll want to return to the Sunken Chapel in the Church District of Shadow Keep. From the chapel, return to the large circular courtyard where the first Ulcerated Tree Spirit was. From the large tree, head northwest to find another large chapel. Head inside, but watch out for Wego, the special Elder Fire Knight. He summons the exploding enemies that charge after you. Defeat him to receive the Death Mask Helm .
  • Beyond Wego, you'll see a small chamber with a headless Marika statue. Before entering that chamber, turn right and continue northeast down the long corridor. You'll eventually reach a closed door that can be opened, leading to an elevator.
  • At the bottom of the elevator, you'll find the Tree-Worship Passage site of grace. Continue along the path, across the bridge, to find the final Iris of Grace in the Tree-Worship Sanctum.

Some players claim to have received an Iris of Occultation at this final location. It is unknown at this time whether there is a certain requirement for receiving Grace or Occultation. In this guide, we already had two Iris of Occultation, and had used the first Iris of Grace. As soon as there is any clarification on the subject, this guide will be updated.

How to Use the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation

SOTE-Iris-Use-Header

Currently, there are two NPC's that are known to accept the iris of Grace or Iris of Occultation. These NPCs are:

  • Fire Knight Queelign
  • Swordhand of Night Jolan

At a certain point in each character's respective quests, the Tarnished will have the chance to offer an Iris to both characters. Which Iris you choose will determine the outcome of the quest.

Fire Knight Queelign:

You will encounter Fire Knight Queelign three times over the course of Shadow of the Erdtree. The first two meetings are invasions, and the final meeting will require you to have the Prayer Room Key . If you have not yet found it, use Game ZXC's guide to finding the Prayer Room Key. The first two meetings will take place at the following locations:

  • Belurat, Tower Settlement: This is the main Legacy Dungeon in Gravesite Plain. From the Small Private Altar site of grace, head out in the direction of the Horned Warrior that passes by slowly. Instead of following them up the stairs, you want to go right. Head through the ruins, and you'll eventually make your way to a large courtyard with a massive tree in the center. Queelign will invade you here.
  • Church of the Crusade: This church is found in Scadu Altus, northeast of the Highroad Cross site of grace. Simply approach the church and enter, and Queelign will invade once you get far enough inside.

You can visit either location first, the rewards will be the same. Completing the first invasion will reward you with the Prayer Room Key and Ash of War: Flame Skewer. Completing the second invasion will reward you with the Crusade Insignia Talisman. Once both invasions are complete, you will need to visit one final location:

  • Prayer Room, Shadow Keep Church District: Head to the Church District Entrance site of grace. Take the same path as you took to enter originally. This time, as you drop in through the hole in the roof and cross the arches, instead of going towards the Fire Knight, turn around, turn left, and you'll see a small, wooden door at the end of the hall. The Prayer Room Key opens the door. Inside, you'll find Fire Knight Queelign curled up on the ground. Go through all of his dialogue until you have the chance to give him an Iris of Grace or an Iris of Occultation.
  • Giving Queelign the Iris of Grace: This will earn you Fire Knight Queelign's Spirit Ashes.
  • Giving Fire Knight Queelign the Iris of Occultation: This will earn you Fire Knight Queelign's Great Sword

Swordhand of Night Jolan:

SOTE-Iris-Jolan

Jolan is found at the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, and appears to be subordinate to Count Ymir. If you have not yet found Manus Metyr, you can reach it along the same path that leads to the back entrance to the Shadow Keep. Instead of heading to the keep, head south to the T-shaped structure on the map. Inside, you will find Count Ymir on his throne. At first, it will appear that Ymir is an ally. He will give you a considerable task that involves visiting three Finger Ruins. This is a considerable process that will take some time to complete.

Jolan can be found leaning against one of the pillars near Ymir's throne. She is wearing pitch black armor, and can be hard to see in the dark cathedral. However, she is there. Speaking to Jolan during each stage of Ymir's quest will get you only a bit of dialogue, but make sure you listen to everything she has to say each time. Finally, after completing Ymir's quest, Jolan will invade you in the cathedral. Once she is defeated, return to her at the pillar. Here, you will have the chance to offer her an iris of Grace or Iris of Occultation.

SOTE-Iris-Use-Header-1
  • Giving Jolan the Iris of Grace: This will earn you Swordhand of Night Jolan Spirit Ashes
  • Giving Jolan the Iris of Occultation: This will earn you the Sword of Night Katana, the same sword that Jolan wields in her fight.

These two options are currently the only known use for the Iris of Grace and Iris of Occultation. This guide will be updated accordingly should any further uses be revealed.
