Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree introduces several new types of weapons for Tarnished to get their hands on. Most of these weapons modify or enhance existing weapon types, usually to give them a broader range of use. For example, Shadow of the Erdtree includes a new Great Katana weapon type, which mixes the power and range of great swords with the finesse of the katana. One of the most interesting new weapon types, however, is SotE's Smithscript Throwing Weapons.

Many players will likely wonder how Smithscript Throwing Weapons work in Shadow of the Erdtree, especially since the base game features plenty of throwable weapons. Where to Find the First Smithscript Throwing Weapon in Shadow of the Erdtree

Head to the Ruined Forge Lava Intake to Find the Smithscript Dagger

Before learning how to throw Shadow of the Erdtree's Smithscript weapons, you will have to find one first. Luckily, the Smithscript Dagger is ready to be found as soon as you enter the Gravesite Plain. The first step you'll want to take is to head to the Ruined Forge Lava Intake. This new dungeon area can be found on the eastern edge of the Gravesite Plain, and is easily accessed by heading south from the Castle Front site of grace.

As you make your way through the Ruined Forge, you will come to a chamber with a lever that must be pulled to lower a large lava tube. The lever is on a platform that is slightly raised above another chamber. The Smithscript Dagger is found in this chamber, on a dead body along the far wall, opposite the lever platform.

Once you have the Smithscript Dagger, you will want to return to the Roundtable Hold and upgrade it. It uses regular smithing stones and can be upgraded to +25.

How to Use Shadow of the Erdtree's Smithscript Throwing Weapons

When learning how to use SotE's new throwing weapons, you'll want to decide between two different approaches:

  • Primary: Using a Smithscript throwing weapon as your main offensive tool.
  • Secondary: Using a Smithscript throwing weapon as a supplemental tool in your off hand.

Given the Smithscript Dagger's lower overall damage output, even when fully upgraded, players may want to consider using it as a secondary weapon. Using it as a primary weapon allows use of its weapon skill, but that does not make up for its lack of damage. However, later in the DLC, you will also be able to acquire the Smithscript Spear and Smithscript Cirque , both at the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past in Scudu Altus. These weapons work far better as primary weapons. There are several other Smithscript weapons you will encounter during your travels, but these three will serve to gain a basic understanding.

Whether you use a Smithscript throwing weapon as your primary or secondary offensive tool, what sets it apart from basic throwing weapons is the fact that there is no limit to how many you can throw. There is no inventory, there is no crafting. You simply need to find and equip the weapon to have a never-ending supply of throwables.

Check Item Descriptions

The best way to know exactly how Smithscript weapons work, is to read each weapon's item description. Not all Smithscript weapons work the same. For example, with the Smithscript Dagger, every attack will be a throw. But when you use the Smithscript Cirque, only a strong attack will throw the weapon. The Smithscript Spear allows you to use heavy attacks to throw from horseback. All of these details are laid out in the item descriptions.

Check for Dual-Wielding

Some Smithscript weapons are capable of being dual-wielded without equipping multiple copies of the weapon to both hands. Both the Dagger and Cirque, when equipped to one hand, will generate a double when you use Elden Ring's 'Two-Handing' prompt (R1/RB or L1/LB + Y/Triangle). This will usually result in the ability to throw both

So far, every Smithscript weapon that has been discovered is a 'basic' weapon. This means that they are upgraded with the standard Smithing Stones, and can reach +25 with an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. If you need Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, each of the Ruined Forges in Shadow of the Erdtree reward one at the end of the dungeon.

Smithscript weapons are also capable of having their Ash of War changed, which allows for a tremendous range of possibilities. Try various builds to get the best one for your journey.

As you make your way through the Ruined Forge of Starfall Past in the Scudu Altus, make sure to thoroughly explore every room. This site contains the Smithing Talisman , which increases the strength of thrown attacks.
