  • The success of Elden Ring may have influenced the sales of other FromSoftware games, such as Armored Core 6.

FromSoftware's 2019 masterpiece Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has just achieved an incredible sales feat over four years since its release. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice shook things up for fans of FromSoftware's Souls games with its focus on fast-paced parries and posture bars over the typical Souls dodge-rolling. The game was highly celebrated at launch and went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2019. It remains one of FromSoftware's most unique and influential Souls titles to date.

Coming off the massive success of Elden Ring, its biggest and best-selling game yet, FromSoftware went back to its roots to revive its dormant Armored Core series with a sixth installment last month. The most recent mainline entry in FromSoftware's mech combat franchise was over 10 years ago. In the years since, the studio has gone on to perfect the Souls formula with its Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, quickly becoming one of the most influential studios of the past decade.

Each one of FromSoftware's Souls titles have surpassed at least one million copies, with its most recent Elden Ring smashing 20 million in just over a year. Now, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has become one of the studio's bestselling Souls games. On Twitter, Sekiro has announced that it's surpassed 10 million physical and digital copies sold since its launch in March 2019. With this, Sekiro now sits right behind Dark Souls 3 and, of course, Elden Ring as FromSoflware's third-bestselling Souls title.

With more eyes on FromSoftware now than ever before thanks to Elden Ring, it would be interesting to know if its incredible critical and commercial success has had an effect on retroactively boosting sales of From's older games. This may have come into effect with Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, which had passed one million copies sold on Steam in its first two weeks. Without the success of Elden Ring, it's tough to say whether some of these other FromSoftware games would be reaching these milestones.

However, this isn't to underestimate Sekiro as one of FromSoftware's most fundamentally unique titles, as its Sengoku-era Japan setting, fixed protagonist, and fast-paced parry-focused combat sets it apart from the studio's other offerings. Sekiro has made a mark of its own on the industry in the years since its launch, as more recent Soulslikes such as Thymesia and Lies of P implement a similar parry-based combat system. With Armored Core 6 out the door and Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC supposedly up next, the question of what FromSoftware's next game will be is an interesting one for fans of the studio and of Souls games in general.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
