With both expansive fantasy and sci-fi settings, the Warhammer universes have plenty of potential for videogame studios. From top-down strategy games that let players control epic fantasy battles like Total War: Warhammer 3, to third-person hack and slash games that let a player wade through endless hordes of Orks like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, there's a lot of opportunities for Warhammer video games. These prove especially popular to those who want to experience the Warhammer setting without spending a large amount of money on the wargame.

With Total War Warhammer 3 having released to a positive reception last month, and a new Space Marine title announced at the 2021 Game Awards, there are some big Warhammer games coming soon, with some already having been released. It doesn't seem like the news on and releases of Warhammer titles will be stopping anytime soon though, as a recent copyright filing by SEGA may indicate there will be another unique Warhammer game on the horizon.

SEGA is the company that publishes all the Warhammer videogames, after the gaming giant purchased Relic from THQ. Since this purchase took place, the Warhammer videogames were seen by many as being in safe hands, and considering the recent history of the franchise's games, that claim at least holds some truth. Now, it seems SEGA may be looking to expand one of Warhammer's most popular videogame franchises, with an arcade Dawn of War game.

The Dawn of War series is a collection of real-time strategy games that were seen by many as a real-time version of the Warhammer 40k wargame. Though the third entry in the Dawn of War franchise was met with poor critical reception, Dawn of War 2 and its expansions are still held in high esteem by the franchise. SEGA's copyright filing could indicate that a new Dawn of War arcade title could be on the way, specifically referencing a "Rising Tau".

There was a Tau commander in the Dawn of War 2: Retribution expansion, though the Tau are a Warhammer race that rarely feature in the videogames of the franchise, though there has been one game focusing on the sci-fi race, entitled Tau: Fire Warrior. In this new game, SEGA could either be looking to make an arcade game focused primarily on the Tau, or something similar to the Dawn of War series featuring a Tau protagonist, rather than the Space Marines fans of the franchise are so used to. So far, there's next to no news on the upcoming title, though it would fit nicely with the other upcoming 40k games like Darktide and the aforementioned Space Marine 2.
