Sega, the publisher behind franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog, Like a Dragon, Persona, and more, has provided a small update on the progress of its lofty "Super Game" that's still expected to be ready by 2026. This ambitious venture was first announced back in 2021 with little to no concrete details regarding its size, structure, or the Sega IP that would be attached.

Sega has had an incredibly busy year publishing video games with two of its most popular IPs seeing multiple releases. Sonic fans were treated to two games in Sonic Origins Plus and Sonic Superstars. On the Like a Dragon side of the fence, the remake of the 2014 spinoff Like a Dragon: Ishin launched earlier this year to solid reception and fans are eagerly awaiting another spinoff featuring franchise icon Kazuma Kiryu called Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, which comes out on November 9. Sega won't slow down in 2024, as it has Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Atlus' Persona 3 remake titled Persona 3 Reload lined up for just after the new year on January 26 and February 2, respectively.

With all this going on under Sega's roof the publisher is still right on track with the development of its ambitious, yet mysterious "Super Game" project. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, one of Sega's COOs, Shuji Utsumi, provided a small update on the status of its Super Game as part of an annual report. Utsumi reaffirmed that the project is going smoothly and is still aiming for 2026 as it enters production. Utsumi added that the game will seek to involve the "entire gaming ecosystem," including players, streamers, and viewers.

Despite this small update, the concept of exactly what this Super Game will entail is still quite unclear. What is very clear, however, is the sheer amount of resources Sega is pumping into the project. When the game was first announced in 2021, Sega expressed its consideration of spending a whopping amount of over $800 million on its development. It would be interesting to know if Sega did go ahead with spending this amount or if it's planning to spend even more on the Super Game two years later. It's also not clear which of its popular IPs and characters Sega is planning to utilize for this community-driven online platform experience, or whether mixing characters like Sonic and Kazuma Kiryu is a good idea if this is indeed the intent.

Since Utsumi makes it seem like Sega's Super Game has just entered full production, fans of the publisher may have to wait a long while to see and learn more about the game's genre, gameplay, structure, and the Sega IPs that may be involved. If that 2026 window ends up holding true, perhaps it's possible that Sega may fully unveil the project sometime in 2025.
