The design of the PS5 has been an incredibly popular topic since the console’s unveiling on June 11 of last year. While initially the PS5 was mocked mercilessly for its strange design, it seems many have come to accept it, generally speaking. Still, that is not stopping modders from trying to give the white obelisk a makeover, and one modder in particular from creating a rare see-through PS5.

Perhaps the most common complaint against the PS5 is that it doesn’t come in black, bucking a trend spanning the PS2, PS3, and PS4. Custom black PS5 plates and consoles are always met with fervent demand online as many fans don’t want a console that sticks out amongst their entertainment centers, or one that is starting to show dirt and strange black marks in some cases.

A modder by the name of Studio Find and Restore recently revealed a new take on the PS5 that starts with repainting the PS5 not black, but a deep blue, reminiscent of the blue Sony often uses in its marketing. But what makes this modded PS5 truly stand out is the window Studio FR cut through both the wing and the console’s inner-casing to provide an incredible view of the powerful innards of the PS5.

The window is then complimented by beautifully laser etched glass featuring the word “PlayStation” written in Japanese and PlayStation’s four iconic symbols. Other neat details include a nice silver finish to the traditionally black inner-casing of the PS5 and a string of adjustable RGB lights that one would often find on a custom PC.

The video of this custom PS5 was shared recently on Reddit, and while the design was generally praised for its beauty, multiple commenters couldn’t help but realize the adverse effects the window element could have on the PS5’s cooling power. Part of the reason why the PS5 looks so weird is that the PS5 was designed to be cooler and quieter than the PS4, and the way the glass is raised off of the hole cut into this modded PS5 could potentially ruin the PS5’s airflow design, and lead to the console getting much hotter.

Additionally, the opening provides a new way for dust to get inside the system that will be harder to get out with the now disrupted airflow system. Perhaps Studio FR or another modder can integrate the glass better into the PS5’s design or employ translucent plastics a la the see-through consoles of yesteryear.
