Back in January, Rare decided to revamp its Sea of Thieves title with a new seasonal system, something similar to what other multiplayer-focused games like Call of Duty and Fortnite have. It even added its own Battle Pass. And judging by its first season, the big change seems to have paid off. January was reportedly the game's biggest month ever, proving it still has legs to stand on as well as a sizable fan-base and Rare is no doubt hoping the momentum continues with Season 2.

Sea of Thieves Season 2 will begin this month on April 15th and, while Rare hasn't really announced any details for it, the short trailer it released gives fans some ideas of what they can expect. A new emote has already been shown off, which has pirates hide themselves in barrels and is already making players think of how it can be used in PvP games.

New cosmetics can be seen as well for both ships and pirates, like a skeleton skin. But perhaps the biggest takeaway is the tease of a new Skeleton Fort event. These events are indicated by a large gray cloud shaped like a skull, but the cloud in this trailer is an ominous blood red. Since these events involve needing to fight swarms of skeleton pirates, maybe the red cloud means the enemies will be much tougher this time.

So far, the future of the game is looking quite bright. Aside from that record month at the beginning of the year, it hit a milestone of 20 million players around the same time as its third anniversary. Sea of Thieves may have had a rough start back in 2018, but it looks like Rare and Microsoft could continue to support it for at least another three years.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
