Highlights

  • Season 10 of Sea of Thieves has been delayed until October, as Rare needs more time to develop the substantial update.
  • The delay will result in the incorporation of the headline feature for Season 11 into Season 10 instead.
  • Despite the disappointment of the delay, players can still look forward to plenty of planned content for the pirate game in the coming years.

Players looking forward to exploring some of the new additions planned for the next season of Sea of Thieves will have to wait a bit longer before setting sail, as Rare announces the release of Season 10 has been delayed until October. Previous updates to Rare’s popular pirate game have seen the addition of new Adventures and collectible loot to the title, such as the stylish, Halo-themed Sea of Thieves costumes that were available earlier this year.

Originally released on PC and Xbox One in 2018, Sea of Thieves marked a serious departure from Rare’s traditionally single-player roots. The open-world action-adventure title lets players take part in high-seas hijinks in a colorful, cartoonish setting inspired by films like Pirates of the Caribbean. Gamers can choose to tackle Seas of Thieves’ voyages and story-focused Adventures on their own if they choose, though crewing a pirate ship with friends by their side has proven to be the main draw for many players. The popular pirate game celebrated its 5th anniversary earlier this year with the launch of Sea of Thieves: 2023 Edition, which included all previously-released permanent content along with gold, items, and cosmetics to help players get started.

In a new video, Rare has announced that the launch of Season 10 of Sea of Thieves has been pushed back to October 19. Stating that “ultimately, we’re not where we want to be in the development timeframe,” Sea of Thieves creative director Mike Chapman revealed that the choice to delay the season was difficult but necessary. The primary reason for the delay appears to be due to challenges with incorporating what Rare describes as Season 10’s “headline feature” into the game, though little information was provided about what exactly that feature will be.

While Sea of Thieves’ Season 10 delay is sure to disappoint some players, it does come with one unexpected upside. Due to the delay impacting the release of subsequent Sea of Thieves updates, Rare has decided to take what was meant to be the headline feature for Season 11 and incorporate it into Season 10 instead. Rare also sought to assure players that the release schedule for the Seas of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island crossover content is unaffected by the change, with the first Tale available to play now.

Even though gamers will have to wait a few more months to dive into Sea of Thieves Season 10, it sounds like the update should be a substantial one when it arrives. And with five years of Sea of Thieves content already planned out at Rare, fans of the pirate-themed game shouldn’t have to worry about running out of content any time soon.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
