According to a new rumor, the Xbox console exclusive game Sea of Thieves could be making its way to the PlayStation 5. Sea of Thieves was initially released in 2018 for PC and Xbox One, but eventually made its way to Xbox Series X. Developed by Rare, Sea of Thieves is a live service pirate game that received a mixed reaction at first, but has since gone to be an incredibly popular game.

Even though early Sea of Thieves reviews weren't particularly positive, Rare has released numerous updates for the game to improve the experience. Sea of Thieves updates have addressed fan feedback, added substantial new features, and have given the game some incredible longevity. Sea of Thieves being available on Xbox Game Pass has given it an even bigger boost, and now it seems Microsoft could be looking to expand the game's horizons beyond the Xbox ecosystem.

Is Sea of Thieves Worth Playing in 2024?

For those interested in playing Sea of Thieves in 2024, there are several factors to consider, including what's on the horizon for the game.

Recent rumors have pointed to Xbox bringing a critically-acclaimed game to other platforms, with the leading theory being that the game in question is Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush. However, insider Jeff Grubb recently commented on these rumors, saying that he's heard Sea of Thieves "might" come to other platforms, specifically the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles. Stephen Totilo backed up this claim, adding that Sea of Thieves could potentially come to PlayStation in early 2024, which would be within the next few months. Totilo did stress that he was unable to verify if Microsoft still planned on bringing Sea of Thieves to PlayStation or not.

While Phil Spencer has pushed back on claims that Microsoft would be releasing Xbox Game Pass on competing platforms, it already has a history of releasing some of its exclusives on other systems. That doesn't mean the practice will continue or that Sea of Thieves will be coming to PS5 as rumored, but if any Xbox games are coming to competing platforms, Rare's pirate adventure would perhaps make the most sense.

Sea of Thieves is a live service game, which means it needs as many players as possible to buy its microtransactions and stay afloat. Having Sea of Thieves on Xbox Game Pass proved to be a great way to expand its reach, but bringing it to a competing platform would do a lot of good as well. Switching Sea of Thieves to a free-to-play experience would be another way to give it a boost, but time will tell if that ever happens.

In the meantime, it's worth pointing out that Sea of Thieves doesn't really meet the criteria set out by the initial rumor. Sea of Thieves was not critically-acclaimed at the time of its release, so perhaps Xbox has multiple games it's planning to bring to other platforms, like the previously rumored Hi-Fi Rush. There are rumblings of an Xbox Developer Direct presentation happening at some point in the near future, so perhaps more information will come sooner rather than later.
