Sea of Thieves remains one of the most unique videogames on the market, offering players an authentic pirating experience complete with PvP and PvE encounters. The main gameplay loop has players retrieving booty from the game's various islands (or stealing it from unsuspecting pirates) and returning it to one of the seven outposts featured in the game.

These outposts are where the player begins and ends each game session, so naturally, it is important to know which of them offers the most benefits to players. All the outposts feature the same basic NPCs and items, but some allow players to quickly offload their loot, while others provide more protection from enemies looking to steal players' booty. With the 7th Season on the horizon, this is the perfect time to rank the usefulness of the different outposts in the Sea of Thieves.

7 Golden Sands Outpost: In Limbo

Golden Sands Outpost is in a bit of a strange place. Since the end of Season 6, the outpost has been shrouded in a thick green fog, and players who sailed there were left disappointed as the buildings were dilapidated and the NPCs had mysteriously vanished.

This outpost cannot be recommended if players cannot earn gold or experience here, but there is good news on the horizon. During the recent Lost Sands adventure, players could either rally their efforts to destroy or rebuild Golden Sands Outpost, and on the 9th of July 2022 it was announced that the majority of players had chosen to rebuild. How this new version of the outpost will look and whether it will be ranked highly remains to be seen.

6 Dagger Tooth Outpost: Shame About The Parking

Players have more or less agreed that Dagger Tooth Outpost is one of the worst places to sell treasure, mainly due to the inaccessibility of the island. Most of the island is surrounded by rocky mountains, and the bay is made unreachable by the remains of a sunken ship.

This forces players to park on the docks and make the long walk with their treasure chests to the NPCs. This allows enemy ships a lot of time to stop players in their tracks. The upside of this island's unpopularity is that many players will avoid it, making it a relatively quiet place to sell. Players will have to decide whether that risk is worth it or not.

5 Morrow's Peak Outpost: A Fiery Debate

Morrow's Peak Outpost is one of the outliers on this list, being the only outpost located in the Devil's Roar region of the game. If players are adventuring in th map they may not have much of a choice about whether to visit it or not, but it's worth weighing up the options.

Similar to Dagger Tooth, the north and south of this island are littered with rocks waiting to snag less experienced sailors. On top of this, the factions are located so far inland that players with a large haul may find themselves spending a lot of time running back and forth, leaving ample time for a potential ambush.

4 Ancient Spire Outpost: The Outpost Next Door

This is the point in the list where many players start to look favorably on the outposts. Ancient Spire is located right on the outskirts of the Devil's Roar making it a location of choice for players wishing to avoid Morrow's Peak. The island is relatively easy to park at with lots of open beaches and a handy dock, and the faction NPCs are within a stone's throw of the shore.

For players running Athena's Voyages, however, this outpost is less than ideal. This loot can only be handed in within the outpost's tavern which is located on top of a hill accessible by two ladders that are painfully slow to climb. However, for players not on these voyages this outpost is as good a choice as any. If someone is lucky enough they may even find the fabled Ancient Spire buried chest.

3 Sanctuary Outpost: Middle Of The Road

Sanctuary Outpost is the first on this list to be relatively accommodating to all players. Located in The Shores of Plenty region, this paradisiacal island is open on virtually all sides allowing pirates to nestle their ships wherever they want. Additionally, all the faction NPCs and the tavern are located close to each other and should not take up too much of the player's time.

One downside to the open plan of this island is that there's nowhere to hide a ship, and with it being a popular landing spot, less experienced players may find themselves being attacked here regularly.

2 Galleon's Grave Outpost: A Fine Choice

Galleon's Grave Outpost is one of the most recognizable in the game, featuring two interlocking rock features with a ship resting on top of them. As far as its usefulness goes, many players debate between Galleon's Grave and Sanctuary due to their similarly distanced drop-off points.

The large rock centerpiece allows players to hide their ships a little more easily, although bear in mind that this is one of the most popular outposts in the game, and therefore will not always be the safest option for players unwilling to enter into combat.

1 Plunder Outpost: Undisputed Champion Of Booty

The outpost truly deserving of the number 1 spot, to nobody's surprise, is Plunder Outpost. Plunder is literally in the name. Located in The Ancient Isles region, this tropical outpost features a wide-open beach and a right-angled dock that players can park so close to they're practically touching it. The faction NPCs and Tavern are so close that players can visit all of them in the time it would take to visit just 1 on Dagger Tooth.

The rear of the island is covered by a huge rock peak, allowing gamers to hand in their hard-earned treasure in relative solitude. This does prevent them from seeing ships that come from that direction, but a keen pirate will always have a vigilant lookout, leaving this outpost with little to be desired.
