While the swashbuckling multiplayer game Sea of Thieves may have players following maps to buried treasure, there is no course charted for upcoming content in the game. Rare has announced it will not release a long-term roadmap for Sea of Thieves, leaving whatever comes next a mystery.

Development roadmaps have become a popular new trend, and are meant to inform the game's playerbase on what kinds of content they can expect to see in the future, as well as an idea of when they might see it. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (or PUBG) recently released its 2018 roadmap, which laid out planned changes to the game for the year.

However, it appears the development team on Sea of Thieves is sticking to tradition, choosing to be reactive to player feedback instead of planning every step. When asked about a roadmap during a recent AMA on Reddit, the game's executive producer Joe Neate said, "I think we’re only ever likely to cover a few months ahead to maintain mystery.”

Neate continued, saying, "Things will change as Sea of Thieves evolves. We want to have the time to reveal what the features mean for players before we put them in their hands. We've taken a show not tell policy for the entire project so far and we're committed to that." This seems to indicate that players will be informed on upcoming content, but only on what's right around the corner. Anything in the concept stages or planned for the far future will likely stay internal.

There's just one more day until Sea of Thieves releases, and Microsoft has announced a new promotion to get people playing. The game is being offered for free to those who buy a new Xbox One X for a limited time. The promotion started on March 18 and will run until March 24, and the game will come in the form of a digital download, as opposed to a physical copy.

Sea of Thieves sets sail on March 20 for PC and Xbox One.
