In the vast open world of Sea of Thieves, players can participate in a variety of World Events. These events promise not only immense riches but also pose great dangers that require crews to have careful navigation and skilled teamwork. Each server hosts only one active world event at a time, easily recognizable by the presence of large markers or clouds in the sky. When a Crew completes the event or the event timer expires, the cloud vanishes and the Kraken begins its hunt for prey. Following the Kraken encounter, another random World Event will begin shortly after.

It can be a daunting decision for players contemplating whether to take part in these events. Whilst the rewards are often undoubtedly enticing, the risks and challenges involved may give even seasoned players pause. The decision to join a world event requires players to carefully consider their current skill level and available resources. One thing that is certain, however, is that the world of Sea of Thieves promises an adventure like no other.

6 Ghost Fleet

Sea of Thieves Ghost Ships

Ghost Fleets are marked by the sight of a large blue tornado swirling in the skies, surrounding an island guarded by an armada of ghost ships. As players approach, the ghost ships unleash a barrage of cannon fire, engaging them in a some thrilling naval battle. The Ghost Fleet event unfolds over four waves, each escalating in intensity. The event culminates in an epic confrontation with Flameheart's personal vessel, the imposing Burning Blade.

It's no easy feat taking down the waves of ships, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Each defeated Captain Ship leaves behind a variety of ghostly treasures, including the coveted Captain Skull of the Damned. Additionally, crews can acquire the Cannonball Crate of the Damned, granting players access to Ghostly Cannonballs, enabling players to unleash chaos, launching spectral projectiles from their own ships. The Ghost Fleet event in Sea of Thieves combines the thrill of naval combat and the allure of valuable ghostly loot. It tests the coordination of players with their crewmates, but can also be a bit repetitive.

5 Skeleton Fort

Sea of Thieves Ship Sailing to Skeleton Fort

When a large green skull appears in the clouds, it signifies the presence of a Skeleton Fort in the Sea of Thieves. Players can sail towards it and use their ship's cannons to target the fort and neutralize the skeletons manning the cannons. Once the cannons fall silent, players must set foot on land and prepare for the real challenge.

The Skeleton Fort event consists of 12 waves of relentless skeletons, each wave progressively more formidable than the last. Every few rounds, a powerful Skeleton Captain will emerge. These captains must be defeated to progress to the next round, adding an extra layer of excitement and urgency to the battle. Finally, players must face three Skeleton Lords that are fought in the last three waves. Once they have defeated each Skeleton Lord, and collected all of their dropped treasure, players can acquire the Stronghold Key and unlock the fort's stronghold. Here, players can explore the wealth of loot they've earned. However, players may grow a little bored with the event due to the similar enemy types and lack of variety in gameplay.

4 Kraken

Sea of Thieves Kraken Attacking Ship

The Kraken sets itself apart from other World Events. It can only spawn when no other events are active, making it a unique encounter. Unlike other events, the Kraken does not have a cloud indication. Instead, it attacks a random ship in the open sea immediately after a world event concludes. Regardless of the weather or time of day, when the Kraken appears, the surrounding water darkens dramatically. Visibility beneath the waves will no longer be possible. Numerous tentacles emerge from the depths, indicating the presence of the Kraken, visible even from afar.

Engaging in battle with the Kraken is a dangerous endeavor. The massive tentacles of the creature can engulf players' ship, trapping their crew on all sides. Fighting back requires considerable skill and collaboration. However, beating the Kraken nets players valuable rewards. Each tentacle drops a piece of rare Kraken Meat as well as some random treasure items, providing an incentive to stick around for the encounter. The unpredictability and high-stakes make this event fun, but for pirates who are inexperienced or ill-equipped, it can be quite frustrating.

A formidable Skeleton Captain aboard a Skeleton Ship will appear in the event's third and final wave. Players must prepare for a more difficult challenge, as the new Skeleton Captain can deal more damage than previous waves. The final confrontation with the Skeleton Captain adds an exciting layer of gameplay and interaction that Ghost Fleets lack. Once players defeat, the Skeleton Captain, they can reap the rewards that follow.

2 Ashen Winds

Sea of Thieves Skeletons at Ashen Wind Event

The sighting of a massive red tornado in the sky indicates the Ashen Winds World Event. This tornado will lead players to the location of an Ashen Lord summoning ritual carried out by Ashen Skeletons. The World Event is a three-part battle against one of the four Ashen Lords: Red Ruth, Old Horatio, Warden Chi, and Captain Grimm.

The Lords boast some similarities to the Skeleton Lords, however, they have their own unique fire themed abilities and gain stronger skills as the fight progresses, making the fight incredibly unique and dynamic. When defeated, the Lords will drop Ashen Winds Skull and plenty of Devil's Roar Treasure item variants. The Ashen Winds Skull is a unique Bounty Skull that can be sold or used as a ridiculously fun and powerful Flamethrower.

1 Fort Of Fortune

Sea of Thieves Fort of Fortune

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting World Events in Sea of Thieves is the Fort of Fortune. Similar to the Skeleton Fort event but more difficult, players must face off against 15 waves of enemies, including coral skeletons, dark skeletons, standard skeletons, and gold skeletons. After this, in contrast to a typical Skeleton Fort, one of the four Ashen Lords will take the place of the final boss.

What makes this event so exciting is the high-value loot, such as Athena's Fortune Treasures and the Chest of Fortune, that can only be found in this event. Players across the server will often be found scrambling to claim the spoils, giving the event the perfect blend of PvP and PvE elements.

Sea of Thieves is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
