Today marks the return of Battletoads, with the first game in the series in over 15 years now available on Xbox One and PC. The title has received mixed but otherwise positive reception from several outlets and developer Rare is certainly pleased with finally releasing the co-op beat 'em up. So much so, it's doing some cross-promotion with its pirate game Sea of Thieves.

As of today, a Battletoads-themed Fightin' Frogs ship set is available in Sea of Thieves, allowing players to sail the seas with their love of Battletoads on full display. However, this content isn't so easily acquired.

Rather than simply making it a free download or including it as part of an update, Rare has decided to only make it available to players who can progress far enough in Battletoads. Specifically, any players can complete the game's first act will unlock the Fightin' Frogs set for Sea of Thieves. It shouldn't be a particularly difficult challenge to complete, as Battletoads does offer multiple difficulty options.

It does mean that those who own Sea of Thieves but not Battletoads won't be able to acquire it. Chances are, though, that anybody who would want this content either already have or intend to purchase Battletoads anyway. Also, both games are currently available as part of the Xbox Game Pass.

This follows on from another recent update to Sea of Thieves where Rare added support that allows players to only have to use one control stick, thus making the game more accessible.

Sea of Thieves and Battletoads are available on PC and Xbox One.
