The seemingly never-ending franchise Scream has haunted and defined an entire generation. While most horror franchises do everything to avoid repeating the same formula over and over again, Scream does this intentionally as a commentary on the horror genre, becoming the most notorious stabbing frenzy known to man.

The creator of the franchise (also known for gems like Nightmare on Elm Street and The Hills Have Eyes), Wes Craven, put together the perfect group to pull off a stunt like this one. The horror franchise equally pays its respects and mocks the horror genre in this comedy. Of the massive number of deaths that have occurred over the course of the series, these are the most memorable.

8 Jill Roberts: Shot By Sidney (Scream 4)

Jill Roberts - Scream 4

As the main antagonist of the fourth film, the question about Jill wasn't whether or not she'd die; but rather when and how. Although she is the antagonist of the film, she has motives and a personality that some could empathize with. This is why the creators didn't go easy on her.

Some have thought that putting two defibrillators on someone's face would do the trick, but instead, Jill went out in style, and instead was shot by Sidney when Jill tried to attack the former with a glass shard.

7 Christine Hamilton: Stabbed By Ghostface AKA Roman (Scream 3)

Christine Hamilton - Scream 3

Stabbing is a signature move for the Scream franchise, and most characters fall victim to it one way or another. Poor Christine didn't even have a chance when she was expecting an attack from Cotton. While he was confused by the allegation, they didn't have much time to discuss it as Ghostface was sneaking up behind Christine.

It was an honorable effort on Christine's part to try and hit him over the head with a golf club, but no one in the audience actually believed that would work. In the end, this was the perfect opening for Ghostface to stab her in the back.

6 Jennifer Jolie: Stabbed By Ghostface AKA Roman (Scream 3)

Jennifer Jolie - Scream 3

Jennifer was another Scream 3 classic. She played the killer in "Stab 3", and when she found herself one on one with Ghostface, she tries to use that to save her own life — but of course, fails. Prior to her unsurprising death, she desperately bangs on a one-way mirror trying to get help, but nobody realizes she's behind it.

Ultimately she gains enough strength to fight back and starts hitting Ghostface, trying to escape. But as the audience knows all too well, Ghostface only needs one opening to start stabbing people to death, and when he saw that tiny opening, that's exactly what he did. Still, Jennifer's fight for her life was admirable.

5 Stu Macher: TV Fell On His Head (Scream)

Stu Macher - Scream

Stu and Billy were the perfect power couple for the original Scream movie. As Billy's sidekick and horror fan, Stu had no problem tagging along with Billy on his murder spree. As a final act, the pair plans to frame Neil Prescott by stabbing each other to make themselves look like victims. Apparently, these two have watched enough horror movies to gain deep knowledge of the human anatomy, and therefore know exactly where to stab each other to live, but look beaten up enough to frame someone.

Of course, this isn't the case, and Stu gets stabbed deeper than planned and starts feeling woozy. Even so, it isn't the stabbing that goes wrong. Stu musters the strength to start chasing Sidney, saying he "has a thing for her." This leads to her biting him on the hand, hitting him with a vase, and dropping a TV on his head, electrocuting him to death.

4 Rachel: Stabbed By Chloe (Scream 4)

Rachel and Chloe - Scream 4

An unexpected and epic death scene before the movie even starts? That comes as no surprise for Scream fans. As Rachel and her her friend Chloe watch the movie "Stab 6," Rachel begins criticizing the franchise, saying it's dumb and obvious.

This is reason enough for Chloe to justify stabbing Rachel in the stomach with a kitchen knife. She says it's because she hates it when people talk during movies, but honestly, it was probably because she was trying to criticize a masterpiece.

3 Maureen Evans: Stabbed By Ghostface AKA Mickey (Scream 2)

Maureen Evans - Scream 2

Although it's just another Ghostface murder, Maureen's death was one of the most dramatic in the franchise. The scene started with her in the movie theater with her boyfriend, until Ghostface kills her boyfriend and leads Maureen to believe that Ghostface is actually him. But after she finds out that her boyfriend is dead, things take a grim turn.

Maureen tries to escape, but Ghostface follows her, stabbing her in the back over and over until she reaches the canvas, dying in front of the entire audience. The entire scene is as dramatic as it could possibly be. Combining that with the fact that her death was ultimately pointless (she was killed solely because she shared the name of Sidney's mother), it's a heartbreaking moment.

2 Cici Cooper: Thrown Off A Balcony By Ghostface AKA Debby (Scream 2)

Cici Cooper - Scream 2

Cici was one of the few actually intelligent people in the entire franchise. Not only does she actually set the alarms and lock the house when she realized Ghostface was after her, but she also tries to run from the attacker when he ultimately gets into the house.

Sure, there would've been more logical places to run than a glass balcony on the second floor, but she did try. Here, Ghostface finally has the opportunity to show off his massive muscle power, by throwing her through a window without breaking a sweat. But of course, he has to perform his signature move. When Cici is struggling to get up, Ghostface stabs her in the back to make sure the job is done.

1 Casey Becker: Stabbed To Death By Ghostface (Scream)

Casey Becker - Scream

This is one of the most iconic scenes in horror, for many reasons. Ghostface literally smashes his head through a window, to which Casey responds by hitting him in the face with a phone. A chase scene around the house ensues, while the audience is screaming for the arriving parents to get there on time.

Finally, even though she's been stabbed and strangled, Casey still finds the strength to knock the knife out of the attacker's hands and kick him in the groin. She even seems to have gotten away with it when she gets up and walks to the house, but Ghostface catches up and stabs her multiple times. During this process, she lifts Ghostface's mask and recognizes her killer. This epic death scene, thanks to the American Sweetheart Drew Barrymore's acting skills, remains untouched by the genre.

Scream 5 hits theaters on January 14th, 2022.
