  • Scream (202

There are many opinions about Scream 7 since horror fans have been waiting for the sequel since Scream 6 was in theaters in March 2023. While audiences like discussing who Ghostface could be and wondering if the rules of horror will be a focal point of Scream 7, there is another big topic on people's minds: the opening kill scene. Although of course some are better and more unique than others, the general feeling is that every Scream opening sequence is engaging and fits the silly yet smart tone of the franchise.

With Neve Campbell playing Sidney Prescott, the final girl who is one of her most well-known roles, it's interesting to think about whether a major character could battle Ghostface in the Scream 7 opening scene. There are definitely some pros and cons to this idea.

Why A Legacy Character In The Scream 7 Opening Kill Scene Would And Wouldn't Work

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) in Scream (2022)

There are a few reasons why it would be compelling to have a legacy character in the Scream 7 opening sequence. As of now, Sidney Prescott is the only confirmed main character who is coming back, and it's unknown if Courteney Cox will return and Gale Weathers will have a new storyline. If Sidney or Gale was in the opening scene, they would have to survive since fans would most likely be upset otherwise. It would also be a shame to bring these characters back only to have them die in the first ten minutes. However, it's easy to imagine these two fan-favorite characters battling the killer and winning, since they have a history of making it through some terrifying times.

If Sidney or Gale beat Ghostface in the opening scene, then perhaps Ghostface would kill a minor character before or after. This would ensure that the killer still seems somewhat powerful and make it clear that there's still danger out there. While the Scream franchise is more funny than scary, Ghostface still needs to feel like a real villain.

Several Scream fans think that a legacy character could be great in the opening kill scene of Scream 7. Redditor @MoreOfAGameReally thinks that Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) could be killed by Ghostface in the opening sequence. They suggested that she could be driving to help out and would get into a car accident caused by Ghostface, who would then get out of the vehicle and kill her. The fan wrote:

"We all love Kirby, and I have no desire to see her killed off, but this would give us another twist opening while also bringing back a bit of the shock we got when Drew Barrymore died in the opening of 1."

Another Redditor thinks Sidney and Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), who is could be coming back to Scream 7, could be featured in the opening scene. The fan wrote:

"Opening scene is a feel-good vignette at Sidney & Mark's house with Gale coming over for dinner. Totally unrelated to whatever they're discussing (Dewey, Sam, the books they've both written, chosen family, etc), a Ghostface breaks into the house and as Gale goes to block the kid's room, Sid kills the GF. Mark simultaneously kills another GF."

However, there are some reasons why the opening kill scene of Scream 7 should feature a new, minor character. For one thing, this would ensure that Scream 7 is following the tradition of most of the opening kills since, traditionally, fans don't know the people who Ghostface targets first. For another, fans want to see famous actors in the opening scene, and that means they would have to be brand new to the franchise. It might be more interesting to see someone new in the opening scene and then cut to Sidney, which would allow the movie to introduce Neve Campbell's character in what is hopefully a compelling way.

Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) looking at her phone in Scream (2022)

There are several fan theories about Scream 7's opening kills since this is a crucial scene that sets up the entire story. When looking back on the past six movies, it's clear that only one Scream opening scene features a main character. At the beginning of Scream (2022), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) gets a call from Ghostface and fights him in the kitchen of her house. Right away, Tara shows herself to be strong, clever, and able to get herself out of terrifying situations.

While some might say it's unrealistic for Tara to survive this attack, it does prove that Scream can surprise audiences since people expected her to die. While it would be more fun to see her battling Ghostface along with the other characters instead of spending most of Scream (2022) in the hospital, this does at least prove once again that Ghostface may be goofy but they are still scary and powerful.

It would definitely be interesting to see a main character face Ghostface at the start of Scream 7 since fans even wonder if a major character could be Ghostface. If there is one thing horror fans can agree on, it's that they want to be shocked by the next installment of the slasher franchise.
