Highlights

  • Ghostface's return in Scream 7 introduces uncertainty about multiple killers, possibly from a cult of Ghostface.
  • Preserving the whodunit element is essential for Scream. A cult of killers could add intrigue but needs careful execution.
  • Rumors of Scream 7 involving a cult of Ghostface killers raises concerns about potentially undermining the franchise's mystery elements.

Ghostface is back in Scream 7, but nobody knows how many killers will don the mask this time around. Neve Campbell will return as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7, with more casting announcements due to follow before filming begins sometime this year. Rumors suggest that a Cult of Ghostface killers could be the focus of the upcoming sequel. However, this option could turn the Scream franchise into something completely different. The mystery surrounding the identity of the killers has always been vital to the plot of each movie in the series, and the Cult of Ghostface could ruin that suspense.

The Scream franchise stands out from typical slasher movies, because it is essentially a murder mystery that always ends in a big revelation of who has been under the Ghostface mask throughout each movie. A cult of Ghostface killers would create fewer options to maintain the whodunit element.

Wes Craven's original Scream movie in 1996 operated as a murder mystery whodunit, in addition to being a part of the slasher sub-genre. Before Scream came along, the identity of killers in slasher movies was always known to the audience as well as to the characters. Leatherface, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger are only a few famous examples. Ghostface, though, is a different story.

Anyone can wear the Ghostface mask and become the killer. It's one of the reasons the Scream franchise has endured for so long, and maintains such high quality with each entry in the series. It's a real guessing game for the audience and the characters to figure out who is committing all the murders. This is why the rumors surrounding the cult of Ghostface in Scream 7 should be treated with extreme caution.

It all started with the reveal that Kevin Williamson's original plan for Scream 3 was to focus on a cult of Ghostface killers operating at Woodsboro High School, with Stu Macher orchestrating the events from his prison cell. However, this idea was scrapped due to the Columbine High School shooting. Williamson left the project, with Ehren Kruger taking over writing duties.

Fans have long been theorizing that the idea of a cult of Ghostface killers could be revisited in a future Scream movie. Scream (2022) and Scream 6 hinted towards this being a possibility, and rumors suggest the Scream 7 Ghostface killer theory could bring this idea to fruition. The cult rumor for Scream 7 was originally leaked by industry insider, MyTimeToShineHello, on X:

Scream 7 will have MULTIPLE killers. As in more than 2 and maybe even more than 3.

Too Many Killers in Scream 7 Could Ruin the Franchise

Ghostface in the hospital

The cult of Ghostface killers is an intriguing idea that should be explored in Scream 7. However, the whodunit element must withstand if the upcoming sequel is to be considered a quintessential Scream movie. Scream 7 will need a big cast of characters if the cult angle is going to work. Otherwise, it will be too easy to guess who the killers are. Having said that, the fans who don't know about the cult of Ghostface plan heading into the movie, will experience a twist on the whodunit element. Done right, this could work very effectively.

Unfortunately, these kinds of plot points don't remain a secret for long. Speculation is rife leading up to Scream 7 going into production sometime this year, which creates a challenge for the creative team. Scream 6 had the most Ghostface killers of any Scream movie, and this greatly affected the whodunit element. It was fairly obvious who the killers were heading into the final reveal, except for Quinn, who was believed to be dead.

If Scream 7 has even more killers than Scream 6, the whodunit element could take a back seat. That wouldn't be good for Scream 7 or for the future of the franchise. On the other hand, if Scream 7 can create an intriguing story about a cult of Ghostface killers, this could lead to a brand-new take on the franchise that could lead to Scream 7 spin-offs and more sequels, with the possibility of a couple of killers surviving to return later on in the series. This could lead to all sorts of interesting plot lines, and potentially revitalize the whodunit element instead of making it redundant.

Jason and Greg had plotted to attack Sam and Tara in Scream 6, before Detective Bailey killed the rival Ghostface killers. However, their plans to finish Ritchie's movie sounded very cult-esque. This could be explored in Scream 7, with potential revelations of more members of a cult of Ghostface obsessed killers in operation. Many fans want Stu Macher to return to lead this cult of killers in an attack on Sidney Prescott and her family, which could be a possibility in the upcoming film.
