  • Sidney's emotional motivation to protect her family from Ghostface could drive the plot of Scream 7 in a fresh and engaging way.

Final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is at the heart of the Scream franchise, even though she didn't appear in Scream 6. After grieving the death of her mother Maureen and learning that her high school boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) is a killer, Sidney tries to move on with her life while still being connected to the horrors in her hometown of Woodsboro, California. No matter how many new and smart characters are introduced, Sidney will always be the most compelling in the franchise.

Scream fans have debated Sidney's return, and although Scream 6 was still a solid slasher movie without this famous character, there are many reasons why she should star in Scream 7. If Sidney comes back for Scream 7, her storyline should be more dramatic and important than ever.

Scream Revealed That Sidney Has A Family

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream 4.

In Scream (2022), fans learn that Sidney Prescott has a husband and three children. She is married to Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), whom she met in Scream 3, and they have left Woodsboro behind to raise their family. When Dewey Riley (David Arquette) phones Sidney in Scream (2022) to share that Ghostface is back, she is running with a stroller, which proves that she has at least one very young child. While Scream 7 should focus on Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), fans want to see Sidney again, and it's interesting that she is now in the phase of her life where she has a family.

It makes sense that Sidney would end up with Mark as the two have several clever conversations in Scream 3. They are both wise and hardened characters who have seen a lot, and Mark understands what Sidney has been through because he is a homicide detective. While Mark makes some meta jokes about trilogies, these scenes also reveal that it's hard for Sidney to open up and trust new people because of the trauma that she has been through. When he says that she can call him by his first name instead of Detective Kincaid, she says:

"I'll call you 'Mark' when you catch the killer, Detective."

In Scream 6, which didn't include Sidney, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) references Neve Campbell's character. Gale explains, "She's taking Mark and the kids somewhere safe. She deserves to have a happy ending." As co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin told Entertainment Weekly:

"For us, you can't make a Scream that doesn't have Sidney's presence in it somewhere, you know. It just felt like we had to make sure that the characters dealt with that in a real, honest, heartfelt way. And the way that it's dealt with in the movie felt right to us."

Scream 7 Could Seriously Raise The Stakes For Sidney

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in Scream (2022)

Scream 7 should include Neve Campbell's character Sidney Prescott because the stakes will be higher than ever before. Now that Sidney has a partner and kids to go back home to, her fight for survival matters even more. Sidney would also make sure that Ghostface wouldn't go after her family, which would be a powerful and terrifying motivation.

Scream fans want to see Sidney in Scream 7, and there are many ways that she could be integrated into the story. If she did return, it seems unlikely that she would be the main character again. However, if Scream 7 takes place somewhere other than Woodsboro, it would make sense for Sidney to travel there and fight Ghostface. Since she has a family that she wants to keep safe, she wouldn't want Ghostface to find her. Scream 6's new location of New York City made the story scarier since the big city is full of so many strangers, and Scream 7 could find a similar eerie and important new setting. Sidney would also be terrified of a future Ghostface targeting her children, which would motivate her even more.

Since Gale Weathers already mentioned Sidney's family in Scream 6, it would make sense for the two to work together and come up with a smart plan in Scream 7. Gale cares about Sidney after so many years of trying to survive together, and Gale wants Sidney, Mark, and their kids to be okay. The two characters often have hilarious and tough banter, and this should be repeated in Scream 7.

Since the Scream franchise needs to recover and Scream 7 needs to tell a fresh, logical, and engaging story about characters fighting Ghostface, including Sidney is the perfect way to move forward. Before, Sidney was fighting for her mom's reputation, and now, she's an adult with responsibilities, a partner, and kids whom she would do anything for. If Scream 7 is really going to be unique and stand out from the previous movies, it needs to incorporate Sidney's emotional motivation to survive.
