With the news that Scream 6 will have a New York City setting, reportedly, fans are even more excited to find out what the next film in the popular slasher franchise will be like. Some fun details have come out recently, from Dermot Murloney playing a cop to the movie filming in Montreal, Quebec. Besides the confirmed cast, it's unlikely that fans will get any plot details and they will have to wait until they're sitting in movie theaters in March 2023 to see what the new story is.

Although details of Scream 6 are of course being kept under wraps, it's possible to think about what a New York City setting will mean for the next film in the franchise.

Although it's a shame that Neve Campbell won't star in Scream 6, the news that Scream 6 could be set in New York City seems interesting, exciting, and fresh. It's true that the best Scream films happen in Woodsboro, the California small town where Sidney Prescott grew up and has returned several times thanks to new Ghostfaces carrying on the legacy or having new reasons to want to go on a murder spree. But since Sidney won't be a major part of the film, and it seems likely that the characters will only briefly reference Sidney and then move on just as quickly, it will be great to see the characters in a new place.

If Scream 6 took place in Woodsboro, fans would of course be happy as the small town is a significant part of the story. But it would seem strange to watch the characters dealing with a new Ghostface without Sidney being there and there wouldn't really be any legitimate reasons why Sidney wouldn't be able to come back this time to help out. After all, Sidney makes sure to be there for Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barerra) in Scream (2022).

The best horror movie settings often include creepy small towns, but NYC is such a vibrant, busy, and interesting city that it seems like the perfect place for the next chapter of Scream to unfold. Perhaps the younger characters Tara, Sam, Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) are going to college in New York City. Or if not, then something has happened to bring them all there. Maybe the characters get a note (or text message or social media DM) from Ghostface, telling them to meet up in NYC.

The NYC setting also seems logical since Scream final girl Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) moved to the city before Scream (2022) as she's now the host of a morning TV series. The fact that Gale has been living there for a while suggests that maybe Gale is connected to the new Ghostface. Maybe Gale's show will be a major setting as well and the body count will pile up at the station, leading Gale to jump into action and help find out who is doing this.

Since Hayden Panettiere's popular Scream character Kirby Reed is returning, it seems likely that Kirby could be living in New York as well. Maybe Kirby is working as a journalist or filmmaker or has another cool and interesting career. Kirby is so smart that it seems likely that she has created an awesome life for herself while never forgetting the pain and suffering that she went through when she lost good friends and was almost killed by her best friend and the person who claimed to be in love with her.

Scream 6 will likely be visually beautiful and stunning, since Montreal is a pretty city, and since it will be standing in for New York, audiences can likely expect an urban setting that looks artistic, fun, and exciting. This new location breathes life into the franchise and offers up a compelling reason to check out the new film. Fans have seen Ghostface hanging out in Stu Macher's (Matthew Lillard) house, hanging out in the grocery store and high school, and in the town square. It's time for something new.

Scream (2022) is great because it links the past and present together, introducing new characters but making sure to honor Gale, Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and, of course, Sidney. Scream 6 will be something totally different and new, suggesting that there's still a good reason to make a new Scream movie, and even setting up future sequels. Maybe if there are more Scream movies being made, which would make sense since it's a popular slasher franchise, each film will take place in a brand new location. This would be even more terrifying since it would suggest that Ghostface can find the characters anywhere, which means that they can never truly escape.
