Scream 5 is the next installment of the long-running horror franchise that birthed the Ghostface Killer. Now, new character posters give the spotlight to returning actors Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette.

While Scream 5 will introduce several new cast members to the franchise, the latest entry will join horror classics like Halloween by bringing back characters from the original. In the case of Scream 5, Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley are all coming back for another thrilling fight against Ghostface.

The Scream 5 posters that were recently released feature these three main characters, who are each seen holding Ghostface's mask. The posters will no doubt fuel theories that the true identity of Ghostface in Scream 5 will actually be one of the heroes from the first four films. There have also been rumors of another original Scream character returning for the fifth installment, one who died in the first film. If true, it would seem Scream 5 is attempting to bring the franchise back full circle and having one of the original heroes become Ghostface would certainly be a surprising way to conclude the story.

The Scream 5 synopsis reads, "Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past." With these characters coming back, there's the question of how their trauma has impacted their state of mind. Some fans think that there's a possibility that one (or all of) the characters didn't heal from everything they've been through and are filling a void by becoming the killer that haunted them mentally and physically during the original movies.

Scream 5 has been doing a good job at teasing the true identity of Ghostface, with most promotional material using the line "It's always someone you know." Now, with the movie taking place in the present day, it will be cool to see how the Ghostface killer uses new tech to plan their attacks. With smartphones, alarms, the internet, and social media, there are many ways for the killer to hunt or be caught. The Scream franchise has a history of bringing surprises and twists out of nowhere, which is why fans are expecting something unexpected to happen in the fifth film. Having one of the traumatized characters become the killer would definitely fit that description.

Seeing a traumatized character isn't unheard of. Fans who have seen the new Halloween films know that Laurie Strode has become very jaded, haunted, and reactionary due to her past of being followed by Michael Myers. She learned how to fight, shoot, build traps, and arm bombs in order to protect herself. She also became a shell of her former self due to the psychological damage that occurs after being followed by a killer who doesn't die for decades. So it's not surprising if any of the Scream characters deal with the same issues due to their past.

Scream 5 will be in theaters on January 14, 2022.
