As fans grapple with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and its unique new take on the beloved story it's based on, the creators behind the new show deliver some bad news for viewers already looking to them for more adventures with the beloved characters.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was initially presented as a second adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim. The series had already been adapted into a Scott Pilgrim movie with some differences from the comics to cult acclaim. However, an animated series was seen by many as a chance to flesh out the parts of the source material the film adaptation had to skip. However, the creator and his collaborators had a surprise in store for fans that was cunningly kept out of the promotional material released before the show's debut on Netflix.

With the show getting the Scott Pilgrim cast back together and fans recovering from the whiplash of the series’ true nature, talk of a second season has already come bubbling up. In an interview with Rolling Stone, original creator O'Malley gave fans some disappointing news about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's potential second season. “It’s self-contained for now. We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in,” O'Malley revealed. “I never say never, but right now, it seems like it would take about 50 different miracles simultaneously for another season to happen. So we’ll see.” Series co-creator BenDavid Grabinski was also present for the interview and reiterated the disappointing news for fans.

We’re not working on it. We have no official ideas. We put everything we had into this, and we think it has a really great ending that we’re proud of. I don’t make any plans in general. Maybe some day one of us will text each other an idea that’s really great for a Season Two. But for now, my entire brain and heart is in this thing, and just getting it out into the world.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Season 2 Update

The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off ending was intentional, with O'Malley saying, “People are always complaining about how shows get canceled after one season. So we hedged our bets immediately, and tried to make a self-contained one season.” Grabinski concurred, expressing his satisfaction by saying, “Everything that we set up emotionally and thematically in this season has closure. If there was no more TV after November 18, I’d be fine.” While fans are just as likely to complain about the lack of a push for season two, the sentiment toward premature cancelations is one that many would admit to having suffered from before, making it a wise decision to give Scott Pilgrim Takes Off closure.

It's been a longtime wish of many fans and stars for Scott Pilgrim to return as an anime, and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a good answer to those wishes, despite the twist its plot presents on the original story. This same twist also leaves the board open for more content than a straightforward adaptation would’ve allowed. Despite the potential, it was probably a good move to make the first season self-contained and wait on the reception to motivate Netflix to give a nod for the second season.

Fans can only hope for an encouraging season 2 update from Netflix a la One Piece. While Scott Pilgrim Takes Off wasn’t as ambitious, there’s a lot of room for experimenting with awesome new things if a renewal does float O'Malley and Grabinski's way.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is currently streaming on Netflix.
