A new clip has been released for the upcoming anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which is set to air on Netflix from November 17th. The video was posted on Netflix's official YouTube channel after premiering at the Drop 01 event last Wednesday. It is the first official clip of the anime to be released other than the teaser trailer, which came out about a month ago now.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The graphic novel also inspired a very popular live-action movie in 2010 titled Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Since then, there has not been much new media in the Scott Pilgrim franchise other than a video game of the same name, but hints have been dropped since 2020 by the director and co-writer of the live action movie, Edgar Write.

The Scott Pilgrim franchise follows the story of a young adult in his 20s living in Toronto, following him through his daily grind trying to keep jobs and his apartment, all while fighting his seven evil ex-girlfriends that show up usually with the worst timing. And on top of that, he has a major crush on a girl in town, and is trying to make progress with her while constantly being thwarted by his exes. Both the graphic novel and live action movie have a large fan-base, and are highly rated.

The new clip shows the first time that Scott learns the identity of his new crush, Ramona Flowers. After finding out that she delivers DVDs for Netflix - a nice blast from the past - he rushes home to rent a movie. Finally, mirroring one of the most famous scenes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott waits by the door immediately after making the order until Ramona brings the DVD, even though several days have passed. It is a great clip to interest new people in the anime, while also making old fans excited by seeing a new version of one of their favorite scenes.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will be the first animated installment in the series, and most of the original cast of the live action movie have returned to voice their characters. This includes the leading characters of Scott (Michael Cera), Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). It is being animated by Japanese studio Science SARU, the studio behind DEVILMAN crybaby and The Heike Story. The director is Abel Góngora, who directed the episode "TO-B1" in Star Wars: Visions, another project that turned live action into anime.

Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley has talked about how manga influenced his original work, and even did the cover art for the March 2008 issue of Viz's Shojo Beat magazine. In that issue, O'Malley also contributed an art tutorial and a 4-panel comic. While Scott PilgrimTakes Off could just as easily have been animated by a Western studio, it is interesting to see it being turned into an anime by a Japanese studio instead. Hopefully it can be just as successful as the rest of the franchise!
