Scarlett Johansson addressed the rumors about Black Widow's return to the MCU after she died in Avengers: Endgame and how the character could be revived.

Several Avengers died in Endgame, including Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow. She and her pal Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) joined forces and fled to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. However, they learned from Red Skull that they must sacrifice something they love to attain the gem. An emotional fight ensued between the two, and eventually, Black Widow jumped to her death. Hawkeye returns to Earth with the Soul Stone and reunites with the rest of the Avengers with a broken heart over the loss. That particular plot ended Black Widow's story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with TODAY, Johannson was asked about the rumors of Black Widow's potential return in a new Avengers movie following her emotional death in Endgame. The Lucy star asked the hosts if they meant there was a loophole in the storyline potentially giving her character a chance to return. "Yes," they replied, with one pointing out that Marvel is a "multiverse," so it's possible to make Black Widow alive in another universe.

However, Johansson seemingly shut down the rumors. "I feel like that's kinda the end, right? Could it be like a vampire version of the character? I'm here for that! Or a zombie version," the 38-year-old actress replied. Johansson remarked how the hosts were asking her difficult questions and jokingly told them that she didn't have to give them the details before asking them to "change the topic quickly."

Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame is one of the film's most emotional and moving scenes, aside from Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man sacrificing himself to save the entire universe. Watching Black Widow and Hawkeye's reaction when they learned that one had to be sacrificed to get the stone was tearjerking. An emotional battle ensued between them as they raced to their deaths to ensure the other lived. Black Widow successfully saves Hawkeye by falling to her death. MCU fans understood that Black Widow wanted Hawkeye to live because he had a family waiting for his return.

That scene highlighted Clint (Hawkeye) and Natasha's tight friendship, which began before the Avengers was formed. Hawkeye was initially tasked to kill Black Widow in the Budapest Operation, but they worked together to take down Dreykov. They became good partners, with Hawkeye fondly calling her "Nat." Black Widow returned the favor to her pal when she saved Hawkeye in The Avengers after Loki used the scepter to mind control him. The duo has a solid and long history, with some fans even rooting for them romantically. Black Widow's death in Endgame was emotional, poignant, and genuine. It was also satisfying, so it's understandable why Johansson felt it was the end.

Black Widow is available on Disney Plus.
