It’s no surprise that a game called Dead Space would feature a lot of horrors and a lot of frights. There are some scary moments in Dead Space, and the fact that the 2008 video game received a next-gen remake makes it all the scarier for audiences both old and new, with new gameplay and graphics to heighten the fear factor.

If players are brave enough to board the USG Ishimura and wear the RIG suit of Isaac Clarke, they will be in for a horror sci-fi spectacle. The scariest moments in the Dead Space Remake will keep players engaged and awake.

8 A Deadly Head Banging

As Isaac Clarke navigates through the corridors and halls of the dead, he will hear a faint banging. It’s an ominous sound that lurks and echoes across the narrow walkways, until Isaac finds the source and discovers a human still alive the USG Ishimura. However, this human is like all the others, and has given over their mind to the horror.

The survivor that Isaac finds doesn’t even acknowledge the engineer here to save the day, and continuously bashes his head against the metallic wall, over and over, until it kills him. The sounds are haunting, and the visuals of his head becoming a squashed red mess are disturbing.

7 The Leviathan

It seems as if Isaac Clarke can’t even open a door without something trying to kill him. Throughout the game, and at certain points, Isaac will be grabbed by a grotesque, rotting tendril, which will wrap around his legs and pull him to his death. It’s always a fright when Isaac is taken away from his direction and pulled into the unknown.

Isaac soon finds the source of this tentacle as part of the Leviathan. Bearing witness to the Leviathan itself is a true horror, due to its immense size, shriek, and power. It is a mighty enemy and a true terror.

6 Chen’s Encounter

The crew of the USG Kellion dispatched to the USG Ishimura to find the vessel completely lifeless. They can’t find a single lifeform until it’s too late. The player, and Isaac Clarke, bear witness to the first Necromorph, which jumps down from the vents and stabs Chen, killing him violently.

The horror does not stop at Chen’s death, as Isaac must immediately run through unknown corridors to escape the Necromorph chasing him. With no weapon or understanding of these creatures, it is entirely terrifying from start to finish.

5 Wheezers

Once players reach Hydroponics in Dead Space Chapter 6, they will be tasked with taking out all the Wheezers. Wheezers were crew members that were on this deck, but they have been transformed. Body horror is always a scary concept, and Dead Space does it well with the grotesque Wheezers, which breathe out poison.

Isaac needs to navigate through the levels of Hydroponics and inject the ghastly Wheezers with an enzyme to kill them, whilst avoiding the many Necromoprhs absorbed and embedded into walls. It’s one of the scariest moments in Dead Space.

4 Captain Mathius’ Body

One of Isaac’s objectives is to find Captain Mathius’ body and take his RIG. However, as he starts to disengage the RIG off of Mathius’ back, a new Necromorph swoops down in a terrifying display and begins to attach itself to the cold dead body of Mathius.

These new Necromorphs, the Infectors, can resurrect dead bodies and turn them into Necromorphs. The captivating display of next-gen graphics is in full force, as players will watch helplessly as Mathius’ body grows and becomes deformed on top of Isaac.

3 Meeting The Hunter

Throughout Dead Space, players have learned one thing about their enemies: Cut off their limbs. The only way to kill Necromorphs is to cut off their arms and legs. However, what happens when Isaac is faced with a Necromorph than can regrow its limbs? Enter the Hunter, the most dangerous Necromorph that holds a vendetta against Isaac Clarke.

Isaac first meets the Hunter whilst frozen in stasis thanks to Doctor Challus Mercer. Isaac and the player helplessly await the removal of the stasis effect whilst the Hunter slowly charges toward them. It’s terrifying, and the best way to deal with the Hunter is to freeze it, aim for the legs, and run.

2 Cutthroat Surgery

There are many moments in the Dead Space remake in which the humans are far scarier than the Necromorphs. Many survivors onboard the USG Ishimura are long gone, and their minds are nothing but slaves to the Marker, ready to be whole again. One such event occurs in Medical, the supposed sanctuary of the USG Ishimura.

Behind a closed containment unit, Isaac Clarke will watch as a woman uses a scalpel to cut open the chest of a tied-up victim. After torturing the man, and hearing his screams, the woman looks at Isaac with a creepy expression and cuts her own throat.

1 Head Transplant

Although this is one of the scariest moments in Dead Space, it can only occur with the death of Isaac Clarke. There’s a type of Necromorph in Dead Space called the Divider, an utterly horrifying design of a tall, slow-walking monstrosity, which, when killed, divides into life forms that want to kill.

One of the life forms is called the Creeper, which is a head with tendrils. If the Creeper gets too close, it will wrestle with Isaac Clarke for control. If it succeeds, will burrow itself into Isaac’s neck, and turn him into a walking and zombified corpse.

Dead Space is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
