Highlights

  • Santa Monica Studio may already be working on the next God of War game, as job listings mention familiarity with the combat systems of the previous two games.
  • Fans have speculated on the future of the series, with possibilities including a new setting or a shift in focus to other characters like Atreus or a completely new protagonist.
  • While it isn't a confirmation, the fact that the developer is actively hiring for a project related to the God of War series suggests that a new game is in the works.

Santa Monica Studio might already be working on the next God of War game, at least according to a new job listing. The brutal tale of Kratos has been told across at least four console generations, with the latest bringing the Ghost of Sparta into the nine realms of Norse mythology. Both 2018’s God of War reboot and 2022’s God of War Ragnarok earned widespread acclaim for their revamped gameplay and emotional plots, which saw an aged Kratos try to live a more peaceful existence with his son Atreus, only to be thrust into yet another war with the deities of his new homeland.

Even before God of War Ragnarok was released on the PlayStation 5 back in November, developer Santa Monica Studio stated that it would be the final chapter in Kratos’s Norse adventures. This has left fans wondering if God of War Ragnarok would be the last game in the beloved action franchise altogether, as its ending does serve as a solid and emotional conclusion for Kratos. In May, a series of job listings were posted by Santa Monica Studio for a new project, though it wasn’t clear if this was for a brand-new God of War title or a new IP.

It just might be the former, as Santa Monica Studio recently filed another batch of job listings for Senior and Non-Senior Combat Designers. Unlike the previously reported listings, these make specific mention of the God of War series and request that the applicants be familiar with the combat systems, mechanics, and enemies in 2018’s God of War and God of War Ragnarok. While it isn’t necessarily a confirmation of a new God of War game, the fact that knowledge of the series is explicitly mentioned as a requirement for the job suggests that this new game will at least be similar to Santa Monica Studio’s flagship franchise.

There has been plenty of speculation about where the God of War series could go in the wake of Ragnarok, with some fans thinking a future installment could take Kratos to yet another god-filled setting like ancient Egypt. Others believe that the next God of War should shift the spotlight to Atreus, who left his father’s side to seek out his own destiny at the end of God of War Ragnarok. If not Atreus, then a new God of War game could focus on a brand-new protagonist altogether and take the series in a different direction from past installments.

There are many possibilities for the next God of War game, assuming that Santa Monica Studio is indeed working on one. The developer is hiring new talent for an unannounced project, and now it seems it is looking for workers familiar with the combat of the last two God of War games. This in itself isn’t a confirmation that God of War is getting a new entry, but it serves as an interesting clue to what Santa Monica Studio has in the works.
