New images that have just been released are teasing fans with a first look at Matthew the Raven in The Sandman. The Sandman takes inspiration from Neil Gaiman's graphic novel series that was published by DC Comics. Since then, Netflix has successfully acquired the rights in order to produce The Sandman. Gaiman will be serving as executive producer alongside David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg.

The highly anticipated Sandman series has received an 11-episode season order, which is quite impressive considering it's the first live-action adaptation of the comic. Filming for The Sandman already wrapped back in August of last year, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming Netflix series follows the titular character Dream/Morpheus, who also happens to be the king of dreams and of the Dreaming. Dream/Morpheus finds himself having to return to his kingdom after being held captive by mortal men.

Actor Tom Sturridge has been cast as the main lead in Netflix's The Sandman adaptation, portraying Dream. Sturridge is accompanied on-screen alongside cast members Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as the librarian of the Dreaming, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Charles Dance as the occultist Roderick Burgess, Jenna Coleman as John Constantine's ancestor Johanna, and David Thewlis as Doctor Destiny. Dream's emissary, otherwise known as Matthew the Raven, will be voiced by Patton Oswalt, who claims to be a long-time fan of the beloved story. In these brand-new images, fans are getting an exclusive first glimpse at Dream's loyal raven, Matthew, in The Sandman.

The images were released via The Sandman's official Twitter account. It reveals a picture of Sturridge as Dream kneeling before Matthew the Raven as if he is about to propose to him while the rain pours down around them. The image itself is dark and gloomy, to match the ominous energy that encompasses the Raven. Therefore, it’s a bit difficult to make out a lot of specific physical details and attributes within Dream and Matthew the Raven. The city lights are the only source of illumination in the image.

Yet, the caption reads, “You are my eyes, Matthew.” This caption and first look image not only reveal the deep intimate bond between Dream and Matthew the Raven, but it also unveils his own power. Matthew the Raven, due to his energy being immersed in darkness, is a natural magnet to the light. He acts as Dream's eyes and ears, to help guide him through the fear of the unknown that lurks in the dark. With this brand-new first look image, fans are about to be more eager now than ever for The Sandman to drop. Although its release date has yet to be revealed, at least they have something to tide them over for now.

The Sandman will be released as a Netflix exclusive.
