Marvel Studios' upcoming Secret Invasion series remains a big mystery, more so than a lot of the shows that are making their way to Disney Plus in 2022. After set photos were released not too long ago, star Samuel L. Jackson's recent social media post has raised some questions about the series, leaving many to believe that a young Nick Fury will make an appearance at some point.

The Marvel Studios series will follow Nick Fury as he reunites with the friendly intergalactic Skrull Talos to help take down other rogue Skrulls who have infiltrated Earth and taken great positions of power. As such, Secret Invasion more than likely takes place in the MCU-present, but Jackson's photo may hint at some flashbacks being used as well.

Jackson, who is seen wearing a Nick Fury shirt, posted a selfie of himself on Instagram with a caption reading, "Patch, no patch, no scar, no scar. Old School Fury Day, gotta find the Groove!" The post, like anything Marvel related that surfaces online, has generated a lot of buzz. Many fans believe that Secret Invasion will contain several flashbacks featuring a younger Fury through the use of digital de-aging, perhaps shortly after the events of Captain Marvel, which is set in the mid-90s. On the other hand, others speculate that the photo could mean a Skrull will be copying Fury's younger appearance.

For those who are unaware, Skrulls are shape-shifters, and in the comics they may have secretly replaced well-known MCU heroes as imposters in order to rule Earth for many years. They were introduced as allies in Captain Marvel and their shape-shifting abilities were further hinted at in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where it was revealed that Talos replaced Fury on Earth while Fury was commanding a Skrull Spaceship, adding to the theory that the younger Fury may just be a Skrull in disguise. While many of them are good, there are plenty of Skrulls that are looking to cause harm, making them interesting and unpredictable characters to follow.

Many fans have also been trying to guess exactly where Secret Invasion fits into the MCU timeline, especially after recent set photos revealed Jackson trading in his leather black jacket and eye patch for a more rugged look with his large beard and torn beanie. Fury's new look in those set photos makes the character seem as if he is incognito or retired, hinting that the events of Secret Invasion could take place long after Avengers: Endgame. Other reports point out that Fury not rocking an eye patch could mean that the series takes place right after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a period of time when Fury's whereabouts were unknown and also the last time he was seen without his eye patch.

Until a first trailer and more details surface online, the speculation will only grow from here. Secret Invasion also stars Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Kingsley Ben-Adir as the main villain. Other big names like Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Killian Scott, and Christopher McDonald, who will be playing a newly created character not from the comics, have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Secret Invasion is set to premiere on Disney Plus in late 2022.
