Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion was one of the most secretive projects for phase five. But after the release of new footage and with the premiere just around the corner, fans are getting more insight into what to expect from the series, especially Samuel L. Jackson's future as Nick Fury.

Created by Mr. Robot's Kyle Bradstreet, Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion series sees Jackson return as the favorite spy, who uncovers a conspiracy involving a group of shapeshifting Skrulls attempting to infiltrate Earth in positions of power around the world. The series will also showcase many side characters who have appeared in previous MCU films, like Don Cheadle's War Machine, Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill, and Martin Freeman's Everett K. Ross.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, which featured a cover story about the upcoming six-part Secret Invasion, Jackson addressed his MCU future, saying that while it's uncertain what will come next, there's no doubt he would love to put on the eye patch and return as the fan-favorite character for more projects. "I love playing him, and I love the fact that they're opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has," Jackson admitted. "So hopefully I'm not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I'll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way."

Jackson also talked about how Secret Invasion allowed him to explore a new side of Nick Fury. "I had to figure out some stuff and work out some new things, which I've been trying to do for a while," Jackson added. "It's great to have an opportunity to find out who he was and delve into how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life."

Based on his comments, it does appear that Secret Invasion will present a new side of Fury. Released footage shows Nick Fury trading in his eye patch and black leather jacket for a more rugged look with his large beard and torn fisherman’s beanie, which implies he's in hiding or even retired. Whatever the case, it will be refreshing to see a greater exploration of his character, something that has not been seen all too much in past MCU films.

Secret Invasion also stars Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, the leader of a Skrull sect and an ally of Fury; Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, the main villain; Emilia Clarke as G'iah, Talos' daughter; and Olivia Coleman as Sonya Falsworth, an MI6 agent. Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo, Charlayne Woodard, Samuel Adewunmi, and Katie Finneran have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Secret Invasion is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus on June 21, 2023.
