US News and World Report recently named Mint Mobile the service provider with the best mobile plan of 2021. As part of an advertisement to celebrate getting the first-place spot, Ryan Reynolds shared a gif featuring a Mortal Kombat reference, with him dressed as Mortal Kombat's iconic Johnny Cage.
Even though Mortal Kombat movies seem to be making a comeback, there is still no evidence that Reynolds will be portraying Johnny Cage in one of them. This is not the first time he has taken the mantle of a big pop culture character, however, as he is well-known for playing Deadpool in movies from the Fox X-Men franchise. Reynolds also played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that rendition was not faithful to the antihero and earned negative criticism, even from Reynolds himself.
Reynold's tweet includes of a gif featuring Reynolds as Johnny Cage in his blue jacket attire. The gif is stylized in a Mortal Kombat-style background resembling the game's older arcade aesthetic. In the upper part of the image there are two life bars, one for "Big Wireless" and another for Mint Mobile, which is shown winning the fight.
Reynolds' Tweet also includes the phrase "Finish 'em," referencing Mortal Kombat's iconic phrase. At that point, players typically get the chance to give their adversary a final strike or even perform a more complex combo which can result in a Fatality, Babality, or other special moves which characterize the Mortal Kombat saga.
As of this writing, Reynolds's tweet has gotten over a thousand retweets and ten thousand likes. Some of the comments mention it would be a good idea for Reynolds to portray Johnny Cage at some point in the future. Even though there is no sign of Reynolds appearing in any Mortal Kombat movie, fans seem to be encouraging that possibility through subtweets and even fan art.
While there is no confirmation that this will ever happen, it might be a good idea to include Reynolds in an upcoming Mortal Kombat movie to keep the franchise going now that the reboot film has been released. Even though there is still uncertainty about whether or not there will be another Mortal Kombat movie in the future to follow, it seems unlikely that Reynolds will portray Johnny Cage in Greg Russo's version since the character was left out and replaced for Kano.
Mortal Kombat is now screening in select theaters and HBO Max.
