Hollywood A-lister Ryan Gosling has made it no secret that he is a huge fan of his Barbie co-star Ncuti Gatwa, and he went on to sing his praises and express excitement over Gatwa being cast as the next Doctor Who.

Gatwa, who is starring alongside Gosling in the upcoming Greta Gerwig film, was announced to be the next Doctor in the hit series Doctor Who. The announcement marked a historic event in the show's history, making the actor the first Black Doctor in the show's nearly 40 seasons. Gatwa will be the next regeneration of Doctor Who following Jodie Whittaker, who made headlines by being the first female Doctor.

"Ncuti, I am such a big fan of Ncuti, he's the coolest," Gosling said of his co-star during an interview with BBC's The One Show. "Him playing Doctor Who is the most exciting thing that's happening right now. So I'm here for it!" Gosling was also spotted wearing a t-shirt with Gatwa as The Doctor on it, a photo that caught Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies' attention. "This is, genuinely, Ryan Gosling wearing a t-shirt of Ncuti Gatwa as Doctor Who. We’re suing him, of course. Illegal merch #rulesarerules," he jokingly wrote on Instagram.

Gatwa first got his rise to fame playing fan-favorite Sex Education character Eric Effiong, a role which earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television. Born in Rwanda, the actor was beyond excited to receive the Doctor Who role. "I woke up crying, and then I was dancing, but I’m glad it’s finally out and I don’t have to keep it a secret anymore, because I’m terrible," he said after his official casting announcement. "There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care."

Gatwa and Gosling became close during production for Barbie, which also stars Margot Robbie, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and Emma Mackey. It is one of 2023's most anticipated films and has fans of the famous doll anxiously waiting for the first trailer to drop.

Gatwa's first season of Doctor Who is scheduled to premiere in early 2023.
