For those who have experienced the open landscape of Facepunch Studios' Rust, there is nothing more punishing than taking on the environment, wild beasts and trigger-happy community when it comes to online multiplayer. As one of the most brutal survival games out there, its fun gameplay elements and lush visuals are matched only by its difficulty. As unforgiving as it is, it's still a popular game, with the developer continuing to improve the formula and keep things ticking over with the announcement of the latest patch recently being announced.

On the official Rust Twitter account, the game is due to have its monthly wipe with some additional content being implemented. According to the post, the new update should be rolling out today at 19:00 BST, 18:00 UTC and 14:00 EST and will include some new additions to the sprawling open world, such as an above railway network, ziplines, some new achievements, some improvements to the lighting, as well as more.

A Rust railway system update was hinted at a few months ago, along with the possibility of pets being added, so this lines up with past speculations. However, according to a report from PCGamesN, this particular patch will make it more of a "proof of concept" for the time being. Once this update goes live, the railway system will become part of the landscape, but will have "no official gameplay element" this time round. That does suggest that players will be able to ride along the rails at some point, just probably not for the April update.

Facepunch has been working hard these last few years to keep its IP growing, teaming up with Double Eleven for the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Some of the patches have brought significant changes to the overall game, with February's update adding an Arctic environment to Rust. There's also been smaller thematic updates which have rolled out for things like Christmas, Halloween, and Lunar New Year. On top of that, the game has also seen some quality of life improvements, and an official soundtrack being released.

Over time, Rust has become one of the most influential survival games in the current climate, stacking up alongside the likes of No Man's Sky and DayZ. It's certainly known for its harsh gameplay, but anyone who's played it knows the personal thrill of being able to survive that first night without succumbing to one of the world's many dangers. It will be interesting to see where the developer takes the game next.

Rust is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
