While it's not certain yet, Rust may get some new features implemented in a future update, including a backpack, mannequin, and possibly ray tracing. Even though Facepunch Studios' open-world title is pretty brutal, it is a survival game with a lot of replay value. Newcomers especially have a tough time just making it through the first few nights, and that's before they even encounter the somewhat trigger-happy player base. In fact, it's probably this unforgiving nature of the game that appeals to some people.

With the developer releasing Rust's new industrial update recently, the game is continuing to have new ideas added to it. The crux, of course, is to survive for as long as possible, but the implementation of extra ways to play and new features is what keeps people coming back for more. It also looks as though some of the team are currently tinkering with a few things, which could mean there's even more in the pipeline.

That's according to YouTuber Shadowfrax. In a recent Rust video, the host reveals that Facepunch is currently engaging in another "hack week." This is a period of development in which the studio has an opportunity to work on some ideas for possible implementation. Some examples include a mannequin that the player would be able to carry and keep clothes in. It would also be possible to place it down in the world and even animate. Another member of the team is working on backpacks, which would, as can be imagined, increase inventory size. However, it would also make the player slower. There's also the possibility that the game could get ray tracing as well. Shadowfrax makes it clear that these are not guaranteed features, but rather just ideas that the developer is trying out and may or may not be implemented in future updates.

Hopefully some of these will make it into the game at some point, but only Facepunch will have that final say. The studio has already added such things as railroads, zip lines, and even a hardcore mode. Given that Rust is already pretty difficult for beginners, making it even harder sounds like an exercise in sadism.

However punishing it may be, Rust is considered one of the best survival games out there. The studio is also keen to keep it in good standing with the community with frequent updates. While there's no way to know what will and won't make it into the game, it sounds like Facepunch at least has some interesting ideas up its sleeves.

Rust is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
