Netflix has released the first trailer for season 2 of the award-winning series, Russian Doll. The new trailer features lead actress Natasha Lyonne as she again breaks the rules of time and space.

The new trailer for Netflix's Russian Doll season 2 opens with Lyonne's character Nadia, who finds herself mysteriously transported back in time to 1980s New York. As she observes her surroundings in disbelief, she's joined by fellow time-jumper and returning character Alan, played by actor Charlie Barnett. Things get even weirder as Nadia and Alan appear to fall through a black void of space and time as Nadia says, "Maybe we have unfinished business?"

The Russian Doll season 2 trailer continues with Nadia seemingly travelling even further back in time as she uncovers a mystery involving lost gold and family secrets. She wakes up in a graveyard with her friend Maxine (Greta Lee), another returning character from season 1. When Maxine asks, "where are we," Nadia replies, "More like when are we?" until they see an old man answer a cellphone, to which Nadia replies, "never mind." The trailer for Russian Doll season 2 ends with Nadia in a bar, as someone calls her a time traveller, to which she responds, "I prefer the term time prisoner."

Created by Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, the first season of Russian Doll premiered on Netflix in 2019 and saw Lyonne's Nadia stuck in a time loop at her friend Maxine's 36th birthday party. The first season received widespread critical acclaim for its unique take on the time-loop trope, and for Lyonne's performance, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Lyonne is best known for playing Nicky Nichols on the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black. Lyonne portrayed Nicky for all eight seasons of the show, for which she also received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

The first season dealt with many existential themes around time, relationships, and self-destructive behaviour. While the second season maintains a time-altering storyline, the series is now focused on time travel, with Nadia and her friends being transported across various eras in New York City. There's no telling how the new season will play out, but if it's any indication from the new trailer, Nadia is in for one hell of a ride aboard the crazy train.

Russian Doll season 2 premieres on Netflix on April 20th, 2022.
