While WB Games Montreal gave players the chance to work as a team inside the Bat-Family centric Gotham Knights, the studio may have inadvertently let it slip its next game set within the DC Comics universe will be single-player. The studio now has experience to pull from if true, though all the experience with DC Comics characters has been within Batman's corner of the universe. If the next game does turn out to be single-player, it then becomes a question of if the studio will stay with in the familiar landscape of Gotham City or venture out to other corners and characters of the universe.

Gotham Knights was the second major DC Comics title from WB Games Montreal, the first being the 2013 prequel to Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham series, Batman: Arkham Origins. While Arkham Origins was a single-player driven experience, Gotham Knights allowed two players to team-up with the choice to defend Gotham City as Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, or Robin in the wake of Batman's apparent death. The game also featured a roster of iconic villains to battle over the course of the game including Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and the Court of Owls.

As for what the future holds for WB Games Montreal, a new report from Twisted Voxel pointed out the studio's corporate site and job listings may have given away some details about its next DC Comics game. The first is it will be another single-player experience, going back to the studio's roots in triple-A game development with Arkham Origins. It would be joining the upcoming Wonder Woman game currently in development at Monolith as a single-player driven experience, as opposed to Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League featuring four-player co-op.

The second detail is the game will be developed in Unreal Engine 5, joining the growing list of upcoming games being built on the latest version of Epic Games' engine. It may not come as much of a surprise to some players, as both Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad were built using Unreal Engine 4. The game would also be the first comic book adaptation confirmed to be built in the engine, while other games such as EA's Iron Man game are only rumored to be using the engine.

It would not be surprising if WB Games Montreal remains quiet on its next potential game for some time, especially as Gotham Knights has, at the time of this writing, only been out for roughly four months. Some players may not be surprised if the studio is quiet for even longer given it had been rumored for years the studio was working on a Batman-related game, though no direct confirmation came until the 2020 DC FanDome. That said, there is no shortage of characters and stories available for WB Games Montreal to pull from if it is looking to branch out from the dark, dangerous streets of Gotham City.

Gotham Knights is currently available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
