According to a new leak, an upcoming PlayStation Showcase in September may set the stage for a Destiny 3 announcement. Developer Bungie recently launched The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2, which was speculated by many to be the last content expansion for the live-service title as the studio shifts its attention towards finishing Marathon.

However, Bungie is seemingly a ways off from closing the book on the game, as it recently teased Destiny 2's next major content addition for 2025, dubbed Codename Frontiers as well as releasing three episodes starting June 11, namely Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy, that will lead up to the 2025 release. No further details were provided about Codename Frontiers, but some believe it could take players outside the Sol System.

Interestingly, one week before Bungie's announcement, a post by user EsterKraho on the r/DestinyLeaks subreddit claimed that they received "insider" information from a Sony Interactive Entertainment (Bungie's parent company) employee about a PlayStation Showcase supposedly scheduled for September. According to them, Bungie will reveal a gameplay trailer for Marathon during the presentation and a teaser trailer for Destiny 3, which will allegedly be dubbed Destiny. Rumors of a potential third entry in the series did make the rounds recently, as some fans believed Bungie's executive creative director dropped a Destiny 3 tease.

Destiny 2 Codename Frontiers Was Leaked Early To No One's Realization

EsterKraho's claims may seem like wishful thinking, but the last line of their post lends them solid credence, as they specified that Bungie will announce plans to release an "Age of Triumphs" inspired DLC under the codename Frontiers after the 12-man activity has been released. This information proved to be very accurate, which means the user likely got their information from a high-ranking Bungie employee or well-informed source. It could also validate EsterKraho's claims of a full-fledged PlayStation Showcase in September, which is something many fans have been demanding after the lukewarm reception of Sony's recent State of Play in May.

The prospect of a potential Destiny 3 announcement on the horizon is undoubtedly exciting, but it should be stated nevertheless that such leaks should be taken with a grain of salt. At the moment, there is no indication of Bungie gearing up for Marathon and Destiny 3 reveals, nor has Sony alluded to a PlayStation Showcase in the coming months. However, more than a year has passed since Marathon was unveiled at PlayStation's 2023 Showcase, and a gameplay trailer would be expected sometime in 2024 if it's scheduled to launch in 2025, alongside Sony's other unannounced tentpole first-party titles for subsequent years.
