Capcom may be working on releasing the VR version of Resident Evil Village for PC, according to a series of stealthy file changes. As it currently stands, Capcom's Resident Evil games have only received official VR support on PlayStation consoles, with Resident Evil 7 still effectively a PSVR exclusive with no way to experience this version of the game on any other platform.

Though unofficial VR mods for Resident Evil Village and its predecessors do exist, the official PlayStation builds are robust and reliable, providing players with the best possible VR gaming experience. The community has called for Capcom to support VR implementations on a wider array of platforms and devices for a long time now, though there's been no word of anything happening on this front in any way, shape, or form.

Reddit user LitheBeep went digging through updated game files that had been changed as part of Resident Evil Village's new DLC release, only to discover that Capcom had introduced a number of curious VR-related references to some of them. Namely, LitheBeep discovered code strings that bring up OpenVR and SteamVR, as well as a few of the more popular VR headsets, none of which could directly interface with the PSVR version of Village by default. Further still, SteamDB indicates that Capcom itself added the "VR" tag to the game very recently.

Though the Resident Evil October 2022 showcase didn't have any major VR-related reveals, it's certainly not impossible that Capcom may be working on something of the type in the background. PC VR users have wanted to play official versions of Resident Evil VR titles ever since they first came out on PlayStation, and affording them the chance to do so could score major points for Capcom in the long run.

With the Winters' expansion for Resident Evil Village now fully released and readily available for playing, the big question that remains is whether Capcom has any further plans for this particular RE, or if the company is ready to move on to its next flagship production. A future platform-agnostic VR release could give Village a new lease on life, and could be the right way for Capcom to wrap up this chapter of Resident Evil.

Horror fans don't need to despair if the release of Winters' expansion for RE: Village is the end of it, however. Resident Evil 4 Remake isn't too far out, and the bits and pieces that Capcom has shown off so far suggest that the team is working hard to make the game feel as close to the original as it possibly could, with improvements provided in all the places where they were needed.

Resident Evil Village is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
