RPGs are known for giving players full agency. This includes deciding on their own character, such as gender, race if applicable, appearance and, of course, a class. The player's freedom also extends into gameplay, allowing them to play a role in the story, and make dialogue choices that can affect their relationships with others either positively or negatively.

Western RPGs have been growing steadily in popularity in recent years, and the evolution of their combat systems certainly helps.

There are even a few titles that allow players to make the choice of changing their class midway through a campaign to switch up gameplay styles and try something a little different, without the need to start a run from scratch.

This tactical RPG released for the Switch is set on the continent of Fodlan, where three ruling houses reside side by side harmoniously. Players take on the role of Byleth, whose gender can be determined by the player, as well as their class. They meet others on the journey who become part of their party as they travel across the continent, encountering all manner of dangers as they lead one of the three houses.

Classes have never been easier to swap out than in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Rather than having to traverse to a specific location or speak to a certain NPC, all players need to do is open their inventory and hit the reclass option, but there is a catch. They must take an exam with the character they want to respec, and pass in order to switch out their class. Once they succeed, the player never needs to take the exam for that chosen character, making reclassing a breeze.

Before Baldur's Gate 3, Larian was best known for their work on the Divinity series, with Original Sin 2 reputed for being the best. It had truly impressive scope, original and interesting lore, and a twist ending that was especially effective in a co-op playthrough. The class system was also something quite different from other RPGs, as it was all about learning skills and attributes rather than being railroaded into one class.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 does have preset classes players choose from before embarking on their adventure which come with their own sets of skills, but players can find, steal, or purchase skill books that teach players skills from one of the other classes. Players can visit the magic mirror to completely chop and change what skills and abilities they have, which can essentially lead to players being totally different to their preset class. It's a novel and unique approach to class systems that gives players total freedom to experiment with completely new builds.

Developer(s)

Genre(s)
RPG

Baldur's Gate 3 proved to be one of the most successful Western RPGs of all time, reaching nearly perfect scores all across the board, and beloved by fans for its sheer excellence. As a game based on Dungeons and Dragons 5E, it has most of the classes and subclasses from the tabletop game up for grabs, with only a few omitted. As such, choosing one path can be difficult, and even if players are multiclass, they might want to experience something new part way through the very lengthy campaign.

Should players wish to respect their Tav or Durge, it is very simple to do so. All they need to do is return to camp and speak to Withers, selecting the dialogue option for changing class. Then, players will be taken to the screen that will have all the in-game classes on display. Players will be charged a fee of 100g per respec, but this is a relatively small fee in the world of Baldur's Gate 3.
