In Roguebook, players can collect a number of different cards that summon allies. Most of these allies are pretty self-explanatory, but there is one odd one out: Roguebook's Chrysalis ally card.

The Chrysalis Narrative

The ability to take the Chrysalis card is part of a random encounter called a Narrative. These show up as scrolls in the overworld map, and they can lead to a variety of outcomes that are mostly good. These short little fictions all take place in the world that Roguebook is set in called Faeria, a world that is explored in more depth in the board games of the same title. Each Narrative tells a little story and allows players to make a choice on how to interact with it. When players come upon a Chrysalis Narrative, they have two options: they can take it, or they can burn it.

Which Option to Choose for the Chrysalis in Roguebook?

If players choose the second option and set fire to the Chrysalis, nothing of note happens. However, if players choose to bring this little friend along, they will find that it begins to eat their cards.

The Chrysalis is an ally that costs zero and is automatically summoned at the beginning of every battle, and it Dissolves one card in a player's starting hand. The keyword Dissolve in Roguebook means it is no longer available until the next battle. Many cards have this keyword, and there are even some Gems in Roguebook that dissolve cards after they are added.

Is the Chrysalis Ally worth getting if it's just going to eat a player's cards? The answer is: absolutely. This little guy eventually claw its way out of its shell if a player manages to get it to the third Chapter of Roguebook. And once it does, its new form gives more than it took before.

The new ally is also summoned at the beginning of every battle for zero energy, and it has the Aggressive keyword. It begins with 10 Spirit and has the bonus of drawing the player an additional card every turn.

Whether players of the newest game by Richard Garfield of Magic: the Gathering fame are running an ally-focused deck or not, ten extra damage every turn added to an additional card each turn is one big bonus. It's definitely worth having one card dissolved every battle to get this critter's help in the final chapter of the game.

Roguebook is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A Switch version will be available in April or May 2022.
