Rogue Legacy had an interesting gimmick as a roguelike when it was released in 2013. When players died they would restart as the heir to the deceased. The game usually gave players three options to choose from. Each child had varying stats and classes assigned to them.

While these classes had different powers, they all used the same weapon: swords. Rogue Legacy 2 not only adds more classes into the series, but each class also gets a new weapon. There are spears, scythes, pistols, bows, and so on. Of the many classes and weapons in the game, which are the best for beginners?

8 Barbarian

The Barbarian class unlock in Rogue Legacy 2

The Barbarian should be one of the first classes players unlock in Rogue Legacy 2. It’s north of the starting area of the castle by about four spaces. The standard weapon for this class is the axe.

If players jump in the air, they will do a continued roll with the ax, which is great for combat. Another great thing about the Barbarian is its innate shout ability which can freeze enemies in place. From the design of the character to this shout ability, it’s a clear homage to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. There are few better games to emulate than Skyrim.

7 Chef

The Chef class in Rogue Legacy 2

The Chef has a decent set of stats. They come equipped with a frying pan that also burns enemies for a few seconds. The idea of using a frying pan as a weapon is funny, but it gets better. The thing that makes the Chef a must-have class is its innate cooking ability.

Players can heal themselves with stew up to three times. There are certain upgrades on the castle as well as Relics and Runes that can recharge this ability. The more ways players can heal in a roguelike, the better.

6 Gunslinger

The Gunslinger class in Rogue Legacy 2

The Gunslinger is a completely new class for Rogue Legacy 2. It’s one of the few ranged classes in the game which sets players up with a revolver. They can fire a set amount of shots before having to reload. They also have dynamite as a secondary ability.

The emphasis on reloading, along with the twirling of guns, is reminiscent of the classic boss, Revolver Ocelot, from the Metal Gear series. It wouldn’t be surprising if he helped inspire the creation of the Gunslinger.

5 Dragon Lancer

4 The Dragon Lancer class in Rogue Legacy 2

There are two lance specialists in Rogue Legacy 2. The Dragon Lancer has the beefier stats as a war machine. Their lance is more like a rocket, so if players charge it up then they can go flying in any direction. Hitting an enemy will cause players to bounce off of it safely. It’s a great class for bosses.

The one downside to the Dragon Lancer is its class ability which creates a giant shield. This can be good for defensive maneuvers, but it doesn’t do a lot of damage in combat. It’s not completely useless in a fight though, but it just isn’t the best.

4 Pirate

The Pirate class in Rogue Legacy 2

The Pirate is exactly the type of character players would expect to see in a video game. This class wears a huge hat, eyepatch, and carries around a giant cannon as a weapon. Players can bash enemies with it or hold the attack button to fire at enemies from a distance.

The coolest thing about this class is that it can summon an airship. The airship design looks like it came straight out of the older Final Fantasy games. It allows players to bypass a lot of obstacles in Rogue Legacy 2 early on.

3 Astromancer

The Astromancer class in Rogue Legacy 2

The normal mage class is okay, but the Astromancer is a far more powerful spell caster. The standard attack with the rod weapon will cause a black hole-like portal to open up.

This mass will stay there for a few seconds, damaging any enemy that walks into it. It will also disappear if players try to summon another portal elsewhere. It also has the special ability, Comet Form, which allows players to fly around and not take damage for a few seconds. It is an OP class if players learn how to use it right in this roguelike.

2 Ronin

The Ronin class in Rogue Legacy 2

The Ronin is like a samurai in Rogue Legacy 2. It wields a katana which some wouldn’t think to have a long-range. The katana’s strike actually does, though, making it a good mid-ranged weapon. The normal horizontal and vertical slices are great but so is the class’ special ability.

In true samurai form, players can sheathe their katana before unleashing it in a dazzling strike in any direction. It could even instantly kill an enemy if they are weak enough.

1 Boxer

The Boxer class in Rogue Legacy 2

Players may not expect to find a class like the Boxer in a roguelike. It may seem silly to see a character with boxing gloves fight a bunch of monsters, but it works well enough in Rogue Legacy 2. The best part of this class is its combo ability associated with the gloves.

The bigger the combo players create by hitting and defeating enemies, the stronger the Boxer's attacks will become. It’s like building up momentum to strike with a fist as devastating as a locomotive barreling down the tracks.

Rogue Legacy 2 was released on April 28, 2022 and is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
