ROG has continued to make a name for itself in recent years with an impressive lineup of peripherals, including some feature-filled keyboards, high-quality monitors, and even branded graphics cards. The company also produces its fair share of gaming mice, with a few standout models in the Gladius and Spatha. The gamer-centric group is at it once again with the ROG Chakram X Origin, a premium gaming mouse that's packed with tons of features that promise heavy customization and longevity. But how does this mouse stack up against the competition? We spent some time with the ROG Chakram X Origin, here's what we found.

A Space Age Design

The ROG Chakram X Origin is a joy to look at. Opening the front flap on the box puts the design front and center, with great packaging that helps to accentuate and show off a rather futuristic design. The mouse separates itself from the pack thanks to its sharp edges and the RGB lights embedded beneath the buttons. That said, the design isn't overtly "strange" and it still looks similar to some other popular gaming mice currently available on the market. Visually, the ROG Chakram X Origin strikes a great balance between simplicity and style.

Our eyes were instantly drawn to the curious joystick protruding from the side of the device, along with some large rectangular buttons. This joystick addition gives it a futuristic feeling while simultaneously adding some immense utility. Designers stuck with the traditional ROG color scheme, featuring a sleek black shell accentuated by a default deep red lighting (customizable and changeable to whatever the user wants). Overall, the design strikes a good balance and should appeal to most players, though some may find the mouse a bit bulky at first glance.

The device features supreme gliding and movement response even when wired thanks to its sleek and durable paracord USB-C.

Polling Rate

At its core, the ROG Chakram X Origin is a mouse that's packed to the brim with features and customization options. The device promises unrivaled speed and precision (both wired and wirelessly), and after spending some time with it, it seems to deliver on those points. The adjustable DPI (up to 36,000) allows players to fine-tune their sensitivity and the product sees an 8,000 hz polling rate (while plugged in, the rate dips slightly when in wireless mode). DPI can be changed via scrolling thanks to a handy button on the underside of the mouse.

There are three different connection modes, with Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz RF, and USB wired. Players are free to choose how to connect their device to their PC and are even able to pair up to three separate Bluetooth devices with the mouse. The wired connection allows for quick charging, even while playing, and gives gamers the freedom to untether and enter a wireless mode if they feel like it. The impressive battery will operate up to 150 hours on a single charge, and players who may forget to charge their device can see 25 hours of wireless playtime after just 15 minutes of charging thanks to the fast charge feature (using a USB 3.2 port).

The real bread and butter, though, is the added joystick that sits on the edge of the mouse. This joystick is modular and customizable, with players able to remove it entirely or change the length of it (with ROG adding two sizes in the product box to choose from). The joystick itself offers two separate modes, Analog and Digital. In Analog mode, the joystick acts much like the thumbstick on a controller, allowing players to enjoy games with one hand in some instances, giving the ability to control their character's movements with the joystick while mapping other functions to the remaining buttons of the mouse. In Digital Mode, the joystick becomes four additional buttons, allowing players to map commands to each directional push. Those who enjoy fast-paced shooters might benefit from adding button prompts like "reload" or "crouch" to these directional inputs for ease of use. For traditionalists, there are still two side buttons that rest above the joystick on the edge.

Unfortunately, in our testing, these buttons can sometimes get in the way. It's easy to accidentally bump into these edge buttons when grabbing the mouse as they're located a bit higher than other mice. The joystick might also be a bit of a stretch for small hands, as the ROG Chakram X Origin is a bit on the larger side.

Added Customization And Software

The ROG Chakram X Origin gives players a lot of customization under the surface. The rather long high-speed USB-C allows gamers to choose if they want to play wirelessly or tethered, but there is a lot more customization to be found past simply choosing between wired or wireless mode. The mouse buttons and shell are magnetically attached, allowing players to easily open the mouse without messing with any screws. By opening up the device, players can customize the switches inside (or replace them should they get worn out). There's even a fancy badge (and a blank badge included in the box for supreme customization) that players can remove and replace. The ability to quickly and easily change the hardware inside the ROG Chakram X Origin is a huge plus.

Those looking to change their lighting or settings will get a robust software suite with the ROG Armoury Crate. It's a user-friendly companion application packed with customization options. Players can also change their RGB lighting here, swapping its colors and applying lighting effects like breathing, reactive, rainbow, static, and more.

Conclusion

ROGChakramXOriginWithHand

The ROG Chakram X Origin is a striking mouse that looks great and feels tight, responsive, and fast, when gaming. There's a lot to love about its simplistic yet eye-catching style, and the bevvy of features allow players to map buttons, customize their experience, and adapt across an array of games. The added joystick is a huge plus and the suite of customization options will let players truly get the most out of this premium device. That said, the mouse isn't without its faults. Although few, there are still some minor annoyances (specifically with the side buttons that sit on the upper edge of the mouse and can be easily activated on accident) and the mouse may be just a bit too large for smaller hands, especially when trying to activate the joystick (which is a bit farther up the side of the mouse).

Overall, those looking for a heavily customizable gaming mouse that offers great battery life and quick and responsive movements when gaming should definitely look into the ROG Chakram X Origin.
