With The Batman hitting theaters this weekend, Rocket League is celebrating the film’ release with a new car based on the film’s new version of the Batmobile. Since first launching in July 2015, Rocket League has grown in popularity, with players praising its simple yet initiative mechanics and overall fun gameplay. And since Rocket League became free-to-play on all major consoles, it has seen an even bigger increase in its player base.
Rocket League has been described by developer Psyonix as “soccer, but with rocket power cars,” with players ramming their vehicles in soccer balls to score points. However, there are a bunch of other different modes and challenges that the developer has created over the years, and the learning curve and skill associated with the game has even led to Rocket League becoming a prominent esports title right alongside games like Overwatch and League of Legends.
Another thing Rocket League is prominent for is its wide variety of crossovers. Much like Fortnite, developed by Psyonix’s parent company Epic Games, Rocket League has seen a variety of franchises be represented in the game through a variety of iconic vehicles, whether it be James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 or the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. And now, another film franchise has been added to the mix with the introduction, or more-so reintroduction, of one the most famous vehicles in fiction.
Announced on the official Rocket League website, the Batmoblie, as seen in the new film The Batman, will be available in the game’s item shop for purchase, along with a variety of cosmetics centered around the vehicle along with a new goal explosion. Alongside the release of this new bundle, the developers will be bringing back the Gotham City Rumble limited-time mode, which will see players be able to grab power-ups based on Batman’s rogue's gallery.
The Batman franchise has seen a variety of crossovers with Rocket League in the past, with the previously mentioned Gotham City Rumble LTM, and with a vehicles based on the other past versions of the Batmobile that appear in films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Dark Knight trilogy. And now, with the latest Batman film set to be released soon, it only makes sense that the version of the Batmobile that appears in the film would make its way to Rocket League eventually.
So far, The Batman has been receiving rave reviews from critics thus far for its mature tone, captivating performances, and excellent direction under Matt Reeves. With several pieces of promotion being released for the film leading up to its release, including another possible crossover with Fortnite, it’s inclusion in Rocket League was almost a given, but nevertheless extremely welcome.
